Operating the 5-Speed Synchronized Transmission

Using the Clutch Pedal

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Avoid unnecessary wear; never “ride” the clutch by resting a foot on the clutch pedal while the vehicle is in operation.

It is possible to create high clutch speeds when leaving the vehicle in first, second, or reverse gears and coasting down a hill with the clutch pedal depressed. Never allow the vehicle to freewheel while in gear with the clutch disengaged.

The functions of the clutch pedal are:

  • Connects and disconnects engine power to the transmission.
  • Operates with the gearshift lever to shift gears.

To Disengage the Clutch:

  • Press the clutch pedal down completely. This disengages the transmission from engine power.

To Engage the Clutch:

  • Remove foot from clutch pedal slowly. This engages the transmission to engine power.

Using the Gearshift Lever

The gearshift lever (A) is on a console to the right of the operator seat. The gearshift lever provides five forward travel speeds and one reverse speed.

Select a gear on the gearshift lever that matches desired speed and direction. First and second gears are low and must be used when hauling heavy loads.

Gear

Maximum Ground Speed with Standard Size Tires at 3300 rpm

1

4.5 km/h (2.8 mph)

2

7.4 km/h (4.6 mph)

3

12.7 km/h (7.9 mph)

4

24.1 km/h (15 mph)

5

30.7 km/h (19.1 mph)

R

5.8 km/h (3.6 mph)

Forward Travel

  1. Lock park brake.

  2. NOTE: The gearshift lever must be in the neutral position for the engine to start.

Move the gearshift lever to the neutral position (B) between gears “2” and “3”.

  3. Depress clutch pedal and start engine.

  4. Move gearshift lever to a desirable starting gear.

    • Vehicles with a load - first gear
    • Vehicles with no load - second or third gear

  5. Unlock park brake.

  6. Release clutch gradually to take up load smoothly.

  7. IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! When downshifting this vehicle, it is important not to skip more than one gear at a time. For example, shifting from gear 5 to 4 is preferred. Shifting from gear 5 to 3 is acceptable. Shifting from gear 5 to 2 is not recommended. When downshifting more than two gears at a time, it is possible to spin the clutch past its limit of 10,000 rpm. Spinning the clutch at or above 10,000 rpm results in severe clutch damage and possible failure.

    Shift gears while moving:

    • Depress clutch and shift to next gear.
    • Slowly release clutch.

Reverse Travel

  1. Stop vehicle completely.

  2. Depress clutch.

  3. Move gearshift lever to reverse.

  4. Slowly release clutch.
