Starting the Engine

CAUTION: Avoid injury! Engine exhaust fumes contain carbon monoxide and can cause serious illness or death.

• Move the machine to an outside area before running the engine.

• Do not run an engine in an enclosed area without adequate ventilation.

• Connect a pipe extension to the engine exhaust pipe to direct the exhaust fumes out of the area.

• Allow fresh outside air into the work area to clear out the exhaust fumes.

NOTE: Diesel Models: Make sure fuel shutoff valve is open.

  1. Park vehicle safely. (See Parking Safely in the Safety section.)

  2. Push hydraulic PTO lever to the off position.

  3. Move the gearshift lever to the neutral position.

    Turn key switch to the run position (A).



  5. Check indicator lights:

    • Battery discharge indicator light must be on.
    • Park brake indicator light must be on.
    • Engine oil pressure indicator light must be on.
    • Diesel Models: Glow plug indicator light must be on. After approximately three seconds, the indicator light goes off. Engine is now ready to start.

  6. IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Starter can be damaged if operated for more than 20 seconds at a time. Wait at least two minutes before trying again if engine does not start.

    Turn key switch to the start position (B).

  7. NOTE: Engine is calibrated at the factory to slow idle when started as follows:

    • Diesel engine - 1250 rpm ± 50

    • Gas engine - 1000 rpm ± 10

    When engine starts, release key switch to the run position.

    • Battery discharge indicator light must go out.
    • Engine oil pressure indicator light must go out.

  8. Unlock park brake.

    • Park brake indicator light must go out.
