Checking and Replacing Traction Drive Belt
Entanglement in a belt or pulley can cause serious
injury. Stop engine and wait for all moving parts to stop.
The traction drive belt is self-adjusted using a spring
tensioner and does not require a tension adjustment.
Checking Belt:
-
Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY section.)
-
Inspect belt for excessive wear, damage or stretching while
in position on the transmission pulley and drive belt tensioner pulley.
Replacing Belt
-
Remove mower deck belt. (See Replacing Mower Deck Drive Belt
in SERVICE MOWER Section.)
-
Components are installed under spring tension. Wear
eye protection and use proper tools when installing and removing components
with spring tension.

Insert a 1/2 in. drive extension tool into square hole (A)
on tensioner arm, and rotate clockwise to release tension on belt
(B).
-
While tensioner arm is rotated, remove traction drive belt from
traction pulley (C).
-
Slowly rotate tensioner arm counterclockwise to release spring
tension.
-
Remove belt from both transmission drive sheaves and idler pulley
(D).
-
Install belt onto drive pulley and idler pulley as shown.
-
Rotate tensioner arm clockwise and install traction drive belt
into traction pulley. Release tension and verify belt routing is correct.
-
Verify that there is a 3.2 mm (1/8 in.) gap (E) between belt
guide (F) and clutch pulley (C). If necessary, loosen bolt on belt
guide and adjust to specification.
