Inspecting Timing Belt
Inspecting Belt
-
Park the machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY section.)
-
Disconnect negative (-) battery cable.
-

MXT020115-UN-03MAY17
Remove two bolts (A) and belt cover (B) from machine.
-

MXAL44236-UN-10APR13
Remove bolt (C) and slide coupler forward onto driveshaft
(D).
-
Remove two bolts (E) and remove driveshaft.
-
Loosen bolt (F) and bolt (G).
-
Rotate alternator (H) and remove belt (I) from alternator pulley,
water pump pulley (J), and crankshaft pulley (K).
-
Remove four bolts and water pump pulley (J).
-

MXAL44237-UN-10APR13
Engine shown removed from machine for better view.
Remove bolt (L) and dipstick tube (M).
-
Remove bolt (N) and remove crankshaft pulley (K). Use a puller
if necessary.
-

MXAL44238-UN-10APR13
Remove seven bolts (O) and timing belt cover (P).
-

MXAL44239-UN-10APR13
Inspect timing belt (Q) for cracks, fraying, wear, or damage.
If timing belt needs to be replaced, see the technical manual for
your machine or see your John Deere Dealer.
-
Inspect tensioning pulley before installing components. (See
the following steps.)
Inspecting Tensioner Pulley
-
Avoid damage! Do not rotate belt or engine pulleys
from the current position. There are timing marks on the bottom and
top of engine that aligns critical internal engine components.

MXAL44240-UN-10APR13
Loosen bolt (R) on tensioning pulley (S). Push tensioning
arm (T) inward slightly to release tensioning pulley tension from
the timing belt. Rotate tensioning pulley (S) and check for any noise
or if it is loose. If it is loose, tighten the bolt on the tensioning
pulley to specification.

-
If the tensioning pulley is noisy, remove bolt (R) and remove
tensioning pulley (S).
-
Install tensioner and push tensioner arm in direction of arrow
(U) until the gap between the tensioning pulley (S) and the bottom
of the water pump housing is approximately 5 mm (0.2 in) (V) as shown.
-
Tighten tensioner bolt (R) to specification.
