Servicing Drive Belt


Inspecting Drive Belt

Avoid injury! Rotating parts can catch fingers, loose clothing, or long hair. Wait for engine and all moving parts to stop before leaving operators station to adjust or service machine.

  1. Park the machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY section.)

  2. Raise and secure cargo box.

  3. Drive belt can be inspected through the enclosure exhaust port (A) without removing clutch enclosure cover.

    Measure the top surface of the belt width at (B). Replace belt if dimension is less than 29 mm (1.1 in).



  4. Check for debris inside the enclosure exhaust port and clean if needed.


Removing Drive Belt

  1. Avoid injury! Rotating parts can catch fingers, loose clothing, or long hair. Wait for engine and all moving parts to stop before leaving operators station to adjust or service machine.

    Park the machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY section.)

  2. Raise and secure cargo box.

  3. Avoid injury! The machine can fall or slip from an unsafe lifting device or supports.

    • Use a safe lifting device rated for the load to be lifted.
    • Lower machine onto jack stands or other stable supports and block wheels before servicing.

    Lift machine and secure so tires are off the ground and suspension hangs freely.

    Loosen clamp (A).



  5. Remove seven screws (B) and five push retainers (C).

  6. Remove side panel and air intake hose (D) as an assembly.

    Remove left rear shock (E).

    Remove 11 bolts (F) around clutch enclosure cover (G). Remove clutch enclosure cover.

    Lift up on the drive belt (H) to make some slack.



  10. Start drive belt over the edge of driven clutch (I) and turn clockwise until drive belt is removed. Remove belt from drive clutch.

    Spin idler sleeve bearing (J). Confirm that bearing rotates smoothly. If not, contact your John Deere dealer for possible bearing replacement.




Replacing Drive Belt

Make sure arrows on the drive belt face towards the front of machine.

    Loop belt (A) over drive clutch and around driven clutch, starting at bottom and slide belt into driven clutch while turning.

    Install clutch enclosure cover (B) and 11 bolts (C).



  3. Install left rear shock.

    Position side panel (D) over the fuel inlet and install air intake hose (E) to clutch enclosure (F).



  5. Install five push retainers (G) and seven screws (H).

  6. Tighten screws and clamp (I).

  7. Lower machine.

  8. Lower cargo box.
