Changing Engine Oil and Filter

Touching hot surfaces can burn skin. The engine, components, and fluids will be hot if the engine has been running. Allow the engine to cool before servicing or working near the engine and components.

Change the oil more often if the vehicle is used in extreme conditions:

  • Dusty conditions.
  • Frequent slow or low-speed operation.
  • Frequent short trips.

Briggs & Stratton Engines (Z735E and Z735M)

  1. Run engine to warm oil.

  2. Park machine safely on a level surface. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY section.)

  3. Clean area around dipstick to prevent debris from falling into crankcase.

Dirt and contamination can enter engine when checking oil level. Clean area around dipstick before loosening or removing it.

  4. Loosen dipstick (A).

  5. Drain oil as follows.

    • Remove the oil drain cap (B).
    • Loosen and remove the drain hose (C) from the side of the engine and carefully route it into a container.

  7. Remove the oil filter (E) by twisting it counterclockwise and allow oil to drain into the pan.

Ensure that the oil filter gasket is still attached to the removed oil filter instead of getting stuck in engine

  8. Apply a film of clean engine oil on gasket of new filter.

  9. Install filter. Turn filter clockwise until gasket contacts mounting surface. Tighten by hand 1/2 turn more after gasket contact.

  10. After oil has drained, wipe the drain hose end clean before installing.

  11. Install drain hose assembly to the side of the engine. Install the oil drain cap.

  12. Clean area around the oil dipstick. Remove the dipstick.

  13. Add oil, see the Specifications section for correct amount.

  14. Install dipstick.

  15. Start engine and run at slow throttle for approximately two minutes. Check for leaks around filter and drain plug.

  16. Stop engine.

  17. Check oil level:

    • Remove and wipe dipstick clean with a rag.
    • Install dipstick but do not tighten into threads.
    • Remove dipstick. Check oil level on dipstick; make sure that oil level is between the ADD and FULL marks. Add or remove oil if needed.

  18. Install dipstick and tighten.
