Checking and Replacing Spark Plugs

Touching hot surfaces can burn skin. The engine, components, and fluids will be hot if the engine has been running. Allow the engine to cool before servicing or working near the engine and components.

Do not clean spark plug area with spark plug removed.

  1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY section.)

  2. Clean area around both spark plugs.

    Disconnect the spark plug wire (A) from each plug.



  4. Remove each spark plug.

  5. Clean spark plug end carefully with a wire brush. Avoid contact with ceramic portion of the plug during cleaning.

  6. Inspect spark plug for the following:

    • Cracked porcelain
    • Pitted or damaged electrodes
    • Other wear or damage

  7. If plugs are in good condition, check gap with a wire filler gauge.

    Check and adjust spark plug gap (B) to specification.

    Spark Plug (Briggs)Gap 0.76 mm (0.030 in.)
    Spark Plug (Kawasaki)Gap 0.75 mm (0.029 in.)



  8. Install spark plugs.

    • Briggs & Stratton Engines: Tighten to specification.

      Spark PlugTorque20 N·m (14.75 lb·ft)

    • Kawasaki Engines: Tighten to specification.

      Spark PlugTorque 22 N·m (16 lb·ft)


  9. Install both spark plug wires.
