Checking and Replacing Traction Drive Belt

Entanglement in a belt or pulley can cause serious injury. Stop engine and wait for all moving parts to stop.

The traction drive belt is self-adjusted using a spring tensioner and does not require a tension adjustment.

  1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY section.)

  2. Allow engine and transmission oil reservoir to cool.

  3. Cut zip tie and unplug PTO wire.

Remove deck belt off of PTO drive pulley. Loosen deck belt tension by using a spring puller to pull the tensioner spring (A) from the tensioner post (B) on the deck.

Release traction drive belt tension by moving the tensioner lever (C) to the left and pull up to remove from retention tab. Rotate to the right.

  6. Pulley traction drive belt off of drive pulley.

  7. Remove traction drive belt off of transmission drive pulleys.

Components are installed under spring tension. Wear eye protection and use proper tools when installing and removing components with spring tension.

  8. Snake traction drive belt under the idler pulley and PTO pulley. Dispose of old traction drive belt.

Install new traction drive belt (D) around both transmission drive pulleys (E) and (F). Ensure that the V of the belt is correctly fit into the V groove of the pulleys.

  10. Thread the belt around the tensioner idler pulley (G). Ensure that the flat portion of the belt is touching the idler.

  11. Install the traction drive belt over the drive pulley (H). Ensure that the V side of the belt is fit into the V groove of the pulley.

  12. Tension the traction drive belt by moving the tensioner lever to the left and secure against retention tab.

    APY08979-UN-31AUG18

Install the deck belt (I) over the PTO pulley and tension the deck belt using the tensioner spring and post.
