Ballast

CAUTION: Avoid personal injury or death from tractor and loader rollover. Add required amount of ballast to tractor. The amount of ballast listed is the minimum required for normal loader operation. For some operations, add additional ballast to maximize stability.

IMPORTANT: Avoid overloaded front axles or other components during loader operation. Use hitch ballast.

Ballasting based on American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) Lift Capacity and recommended tread setting.

  1. A minimum rear tread setting of 1815 mm (71 in.) is recommended. Ballast listed is based on this tread setting.

  2. Some tractor and loader combinations result in high front axle loads. 3-point hitch ballast is required as noted.

  3. Open station tractors require additional rear axle ballast when:

    • Hitch ballast is used:
      • 4-Cylinder Tractor: 350 kg (772 lb.)
      • 6-Cylinder Tractor: 100 kg (221 lb.)
    • Hitch ballast is NOT used:
      • 4-Cylinder Tractor: 500 kg (1103 lb.)
      • 6-Cylinder Tractor: 150 kg (331 lb.)

  4. Rear axle ballast is based on steel wheels. For cast wheels, reduce requirement by 220 kg (485 lb.) per wheel.

Tire Rating

  1. Tire Loading based on (ASABE) Lift Capacity and recommended ballasting.

  2. Minimum Tire Load Index is recommended for:

    • Heavy Duty Loader Use1—Minimum recommended Tire Rating based on the higher of:
      • Tire Rating for transport speeds up to 40 km/h (25 mph) (Speed Rating A8) with loader EMPTY. (Some tires have lower speed rating.)
      • Tire Rating for standard load and carry operations based on speeds up to 5 km/h (3 mph) and short distances up to 0.6 km (0.37 mi.).
    • Regular Duty Loader Use (Any use not classified above as heavy duty and no transport at maximum travel speeds): Tire Rating for load and carry operations with weighted factor applied to reduce loaded rating to reflect smaller percentage of time actually carrying full or partial loads at slow speeds, up to 10 km/h (6 mph) and short distances up to 0.6 km (0.37 mi.).

  3. Inflate tires to tire manufacturer's recommendations.

1 When main use of loader is handling manure, silage, high loads, or digging.
