Spray Boom

Two ranges of hydraulically operated spray booms (A) are offered:

  • double-folding booms from 18 - 28 meters with a transport width of 2.55 meters
  • triple-folding booms from 24 - 28 meters with a 3.00 meter transport width.

In the transport position, the spray booms are divided into two or three segments on each side above the machine.

The spray boom comprises rigid, self-bearing and mutually hinging segments, connected to one another. These segments contain a total of 4 to 9 spray line sections, depending on the version.

The outer spray boom segments (B) are (partly) protected against obstacles. Upon contact with an obstacle, the segment in question deflects (backwards, forwards or upwards) and can return to its original position once the obstacle has been passed. The spray lines and nozzle bodies are also completely protected along the whole boom width, in order to avoid damage to the nozzles as they move forward during spraying.

The hydraulic operation of the spray boom (and other options) is available in three versions:

  • hydraulic operation directly with the tractor selective control valves
  • hydraulic operation with the tractor selective control valves by means of a hydraulic selector box (EHS-1)
  • electro-hydraulic operation with the EHB-1 or EHB-2 control box

Hydraulic Operation with Tractor Selective Control Valves

The hydraulic operation of the spray boom can be performed directly with the tractor selective control valves. The following connections are required on the tractor:

  • one single-acting selective control valve for boom height adjustment
  • one double-acting selective control valve for boom folding (left and right)
  • one double-acting selective control valve for boom tilt

WZ00085,0000392 -19-22AUG05-2/21

Hydraulic Operation with Hydraulic Selector Box (EHS-1)

In case of machines hydraulically operated via the tractor selective control valves in combination with the EHS-1 hydraulic selector box, the following tractor selective control valves are required:

  • 1 single-acting selective control valve for hydraulic boom height adjustment
  • 1 double-acting selective control valve for all spray boom functions

With the hydraulic selector box, the operator can select the hydraulic function to be controlled with the double-acting selective control valve of the tractor:

  • boom folding
  • boom tilt
  • boom folding tips

Electrically controlled check valves direct the oil flow from the double-acting selective control valve of the tractor to the selected cylinder(s).

In addition the following tractor selective control valve is needed for optional equipment:

  • 1 double-acting selective control valve for hydraulic drawbar control

3-Switch to select folding left boom tip in/out
4-Switch to select folding right boom tip in/out

5-Switch to select pendulum lock on/off (optional)

6-Switch to select boom tilt left/right

By selecting the proper switch, the corresponding function can be activated by operating the connected double-acting selective control valve on the tractor. A function is active if the switch is up, if the switch is down the function is inactive. Only one switch may be activated at the same time, except the switches for the folding boom tips which can be operated simultaneously.
If more than one function is selected at the same time

(for example boom folding and boom tilt), no function will work. For example if boom tilt needs to be operated, switch 6 needs to be set in the upper position (ON) and all other switches (2-5) need to be set in the lower position.

NOTE: If the spray boom is in the transport position, no function can be operated (locked with safety switch), except boom raise.

Electro-hydraulic Operation (EHB-1)

The electro-hydraulic operation system enables operation of all hydraulic sprayer functions via the EHB-1 electro-hydraulic control box (A) in the tractor cab. For this purpose an electro-hydraulic control valve block (B) is mounted on the sprayer, with one single-acting and at least four and up to maximum seven double-acting control valves, depending on the version. In addition, a so-called OC/CC valve is fitted to the electro-hydraulic control valve block.

Electro Hydraulic Operation (EHB-2)

The electro-hydraulic operation system enables operation of all hydraulic sprayer functions via the EHB-2 electro-hydraulic control box in the tractor cab. For this purpose an electro-hydraulic control valve block is mounted on the sprayer, with one single-acting and at least three and up to maximum eight double-acting control valves, depending on the version. In addition, a so-called OC/CC valve is fitted to the electro-hydraulic control valve block.

Height adjustment

The spray boom is adjustable in height by means of a parallelogram lift with Z-bar mechanism (A) with two hydraulic cylinders (B). The height adjustment system has a pressure accumulator (D) which functions as a shock absorber for the spray boom. The cylinders allow for height adjustment of the spray boom from 46 to 237 cm with 300/95R46 tires. The hydraulic hose of the height adjuster must be connected to a single-acting selective control valve on the tractor for sprayers with hydraulic operation (with or without hydraulic selector).

The hydraulic cylinders must regularly be completely slid in.

When the spray boom is raised with the boom folded in, the mechanical locks of the outer spray boom segments will release. The spray boom can be folded out in the highest position. If the spray boom arms are folded out, the boom can be lowered to the desired spraying height. If the spray boom is folded in at the highest position, it can be lowered and the height adjustment will be locked at the end stroke of the cylinders (B). Switch (F) will provide a signal to valve (E). The outer boom segments will also be locked if the folded boom is lowered. Also refer to "Adjusting The Spray Boom Transport Position" in the section "Adjustments".

Folding and unfolding with double-folding booms

IMPORTANT: Never fold/unfold the spray boom during driving.

The spray boom is folded and unfolded hydraulically by means of two double-acting cylinders for each spray boom arm. Both spray boom arms are folded and unfolded simultaneously via cylinders (A). A connecting rod (B) between both spray boom arms (left and right) ensures simultaneous folding, also when the sprayer is folded/unfolded on hills. The folding and unfolding speed is set with restrictors mounted on the cylinders.

After the boom is folded in and lowered to the transport position, a mechanical boom lock device (C) ensures that the boom is locked. The outer boom segments are secured during road transport with a fixed support bracket underneath the boom (D).

Folding and unfolding with triple-folding booms

IMPORTANT: Never fold/unfold the spray boom during driving.

The spray boom is folded and unfolded hydraulically by means of three double-acting cylinders for each spray boom arm.

The outer spray boom segments can be folded and unfolded (together) separately from the inner spray boom segments.

After the boom is folded in and lowered to the transport position, a mechanical boom lock device (C) ensures that the boom is locked. The boom segments are secured during road transport by a fixed support bracket in the boom (D). The hooks (E) will lock the outer boom segments.

1. Place the spray boom in its highest position by operating the single-acting selective control valve of the tractor. The boom will get out of the boom supports. The pendulum system stays locked as long as the boom is folded in. The pendulum lock (C) is operated mechanically and will open automatically when the boom is unfolded.
2. Unfold the left and right-hand spray boom segments by operating the appropriate double-acting selective control valve of the tractor.
3. If the spray boom arms are folded out completely, lower the spray boom to the required spray boom height using the hydraulic height adjuster.

Folding of the spray boom takes place in reverse order:

1. Place the unfolded spray boom in its highest position by operating the appropriate single-acting selective control valve of the tractor.
2. Set the boom tilt correction in the neutral position by operating the appropriate double-acting selective control valve of the tractor, before folding of the spray boom.
3. Fold the left and right-hand spray boom arms by operating the appropriate double-acting selective control valve of the tractor. The pendulum lock will be engaged when both boom segments fold in.
4. Lower the folded spray boom until it rests on the transport support rolls and the boom comes to a standstill. Then, the height adjustment cannot be lowered any further.

NOTE: If the boom folding sequence is not as described, then the sequence valves of the hydraulic system on the sprayer should be adjusted.

Boom folding/unfolding (for sprayers with hydraulic selector)

Proceed as follows to unfold the spray booms:

1. Place the spray boom in its highest position by operating the single-acting selective control valve of the tractor. The boom will move out of the boom supports. The pendulum system will be locked as long as the boom is not folded out. The pendulum lock (C) is operated mechanically and will open automatically when the boom is unfolded.
2. Unfold the left and right-hand inner spray boom segments by setting boom fold switch 2 on the hydraulic selector (EHS-1) in the upper position (with all other switches in the lower position) and operating the appropriate double-acting selective control valve of the tractor. The inner boom segments will fold out.
3. Unfold the left and right-hand outer boom segments by setting boom tip fold switches 3 and 4 on the hydraulic selector (EHS-1) in the upper position (with all other switches in the lower position) and operating the double-acting selective control valve of the tractor. The outer left and right-hand boom segments will fold out.
4. If the outer boom segments are folded out completely, the pendulum lock is unlocked.
5. Lower the spray boom to the required boom height by operating the appropriate single-acting selective control valve of the tractor.

Folding of the spray boom takes place in reverse order:

1. Place the unfolded spray boom in its highest position by operating the appropriate single-acting control valve of the tractor.
2. Set the boom tilt correction in the neutral position, before folding of the spray boom. Set boom tilt switch 6 on the hydraulic selector to the upper position (with all other switches set to the lower position) and operate the appropriate double-acting selective control valve.

Folding Boom Tips

IMPORTANT: Never fold/unfold the spray boom during driving.

Never drive with the unfolded spray boom and the pendulum system locked. Serious damage may be caused to the spray boom and suspension.

The sprayers operated with electro-hydraulic control (EHB-1 or EHB-2) are fitted with independent folding and unfolding of the outer boom segments, to spray with a reduced working width (A). Also refer to table above for the reduced working widths with section divisions.

For sprayers with the hydraulic selector, switches 3 (left) and 4 (right) on the EHS-1 control box need to be set in the upper position (with all other switches in the lower position) and the appropriate double-acting selective control valve of the tractor needs to be operated to fold in and out the outer boom segments simultaneously.

For sprayers with electro-hydraulic control, switch 4 (left) and 5 (right) on the EHB-1 or EHB-2 control box need to be activated to fold in and out the outer boom segments simultaneously or separately.

Boom folding/unfolding (for sprayers with electro-hydraulic control) - without independent folding tips

If the sprayer is fitted with an electro-hydraulic control valve block (B), the folding and unfolding of the boom is controlled electro-hydraulically by means of the EHB-1 or EHB-2 control box (A). The electro-hydraulic control valve block (B) is fitted on the rear side of the machine at the center frame.

The hydraulic hoses for the electro-hydraulic control must be connected to a single or double-acting selective control valve and a pressure-free return line. (See also "Operation of Hydraulic Functions" in section "Preparing the Tractor".) The appropriate control valve needs to be activated constantly to supply the electro-hydraulic control valve block with oil.

Proceed as follows to unfold the spray booms:

1. Place the spray boom in its highest position by pushing switch 7 of the EHB-1 or EHB-2 control box up. The boom will get out of the boom supports. The pendulum system stays locked as long as the boom is folded in. The pendulum lock is operated mechanically and will unlock automatically when the boom is unfolded.

2. Unfold the left and right-hand spray boom arms by pushing the switch 3 of the EHB-1 or EHB-2 control box down. The inner boom segments will fold out. Place the spray boom in its highest position by operating the single-acting selective control valve of the tractor.

3. Unfold the left and right-hand outer boom segments by pushing switches 4 (left) and 5 (right) of the EHB-1 / EHB-2 control box down. The outer left and right-hand boom segments will fold out.

4. Lower the spray boom to the required spray boom height by pushing down switch 7 of the EHB-1/EHB-2 control box.

Independent Folding Boom Tips

IMPORTANT: Never fold/unfold the spray boom during driving.

Spraying and driving with one outer boom segment folded in needs to be done with the greatest caution, since the pendulum system is blocked. Drive slowly and avoid rough tracks, or serious damage may be caused to the spray boom and suspension.

The sprayers operated with electro-hydraulic control (EHB-1 or EHB-2) can be fitted with independent folding and unfolding of the outer boom segments left/right, to spray around obstacles in the field.

For sprayers with electro-hydraulic operation, the outer spray boom segments left and right can be folded in and out with switches 4 (left) and 5 (right) of the EHB-1 or EHB-2 control box, after the inner boom segments are folded out. Before folding in and out the outer boom segments on one side, the pendulum system has to be locked first. This can be done by pushing switch 6 of the EHB-1 or EHB-2 control box down. It takes about 10 seconds before the pendulum system is completely locked.

Boom folding/unfolding (for sprayers with electro-hydraulic control) - with independent folding tips

If the sprayer is fitted with an electro-hydraulic control valve block (C), the folding and unfolding of the boom is controlled electro-hydraulically by the means of the EHB-1 (A) or EHB-2 control box (B). The electro-hydraulic control valve block (C) is fitted on the rear of the parallelogram height adjustment.

The hydraulic hoses for the electro-hydraulic control must be connected to a single or double-acting selective control valve and a pressure-free return line. The appropriate control valve needs to be activated constantly to supply the electro-hydraulic control valve block with oil. Also refer to "Operation of Hydraulic Functions" in the section "Preparing the Tractor".

Proceed as follows to unfold the spray booms:

1. Place the spray boom in its highest position by pushing switch 7 of the EHB-1 or EHB-2 control box up. The pendulum lock needs to be activated (switch 6 in upper position).
2. Unfold the left and right-hand spray boom arms by pushing the switch 3 of the EHB-1 or EHB-2 control box down. The inner boom segments will fold out.
3. Unfold the left and right-hand outer boom segments by pushing switches 4 (left) and 5 (right) of the EHB-1 or EHB-2 control box down. The outer left and right-hand boom segments will fold out.
4. When the outer boom segments are folded out completely, the pendulum lock cylinder has to be unlocked by pushing down switch 6 of the EHB-1 or EHB-2 control box to unlock the pendulum system. It takes about 10 seconds before the pendulum system is unlocked.
5. Lower the spray boom to the required spray boom height by pushing down switch 7 of the EHB-1 or EHB-2 control box.
6. If required, the boom tilt can be adjusted with switch 8 of the EHB-1 or EHB-2 control box, or with the rotary switch on the EL-4 spray rate controller.

Folding of the spray boom takes place in reverse order:

1. Place the unfolded spray boom in its highest position by pushing switch 7 of the EHB-1 or EHB-2 control box up.
2. Lock the pendulum system by pushing up switch 6 of the EHB-1 or EHB-2 control box. It takes about 10 seconds before the pendulum system is locked.
3. The boom needs to be set into a level position. The boom tilt can be adjusted with switch 8 of the EHB-1 or EHB-2 control box, or with the rotary switch on the EL-4 spray rate controller.
4. Fold the left and right-hand outer spray boom segments by pushing switch 4 (left) and 5 (right) of the EHB-1 or EHB-2 control box up. The outer spray boom segments will fold in.
5. Fold the left and right-hand inner spray boom segments in by pushing switch 3 of the EHB-1 or EHB-2 control box up. Both inner spray boom segments left and right will fold in simultaneously.
6. Lower the folded spray boom by pushing down switch 7 of the EHB-1 or EHB-2 control box until it rests on the transport support rolls. Then, the height adjustment cannot be lowered any further.

WZ00085,0000392 -19-22AUG05-20/21

Variable Geometry

Sprayers with electro-hydraulic control can be fitted with independent raising and lowering of the spray boom arms left and right (variable geometry). This can be used to spray in sloping and irregular fields to adjust the correct height of the nozzles above the ground.

Two adjustable rods (A) or hydraulic cylinders (B) are installed between the centre frame and the inner boom segments left and right.

The mechanical top link (A) needs to be connected to the first slot of the bar between the center boom section and the inner boom segment. The top link can be adjusted if required in order to align the boom segments horizontally.

Hydraulic boom raise cylinders (B) are installed instead of the mechanical top links in case the variable geometry is available.

If the bottoms of the cylinders are connected to the rear slots, the boom arms can only be raised (up to 10°) and not be lowered below horizontal position. If the cylinder is completely extracted (out), the spray boom will be level when folded out.

If the bottoms of the cylinders are connected to the first slots, the boom arms can be raised (up to 10°).

If the spray boom is unfolded, the left and right spray boom arms can be raised by pushing switch 1 (left) and 2 (right) of the EHB-1 or EHB-2 control box up.

Before folding in the spray boom, the left and right spray boom arms always have to be level.
