Automatic Adjustment Of Kernel Processor Roll Clearance

In order to achieve good harvest performance, the clearance between the two kernel processor rolls will have to be precisely adjusted. A misadjustment of the kernel processor clearance will impair the fermentation

process of the crop and thus will result in a poor quality of the silage. The kernel processor adjust process ensures that the kernel processor clearance is consistent over the entire width of the rolls.

Settable Steps - Range of Kernel Processor Clearance

Automatic Kernel Processor Clearance Adjustment

The following conditions have to be met for the activation of the automatic kernel processor clearance adjust function:

  • The engine is running
  • The road safety switch in field operating mode
  • Cutterhead speed greater than 350 rpm

Whenever the above conditions are met, it is possible to start the automatic kernel processor adjust function by selecting the desired kernel processor clearance, by pushing the kernel processor adjust switch (A), selecting the kernel processor clearance by turning the input control knob (B) and then pressing the automatic kernel processor adjust mode switch (C).

Steps Kernel Processor Roll Clearance
0.25 mm (0.0098 inch.) 1-5 mm (0.039-0.196 in.)
1 mm (0.039 inch.) 5-10 mm (0.196-0.39 in.)
7700 and 7800
1 mm (0.039 inch.) 5-20 mm (0.196-0.78 in.)
7200 - 7500

If the automatic kernel processor adjust function has accepted the kernel processor adjust request, the performance monitor will provide actual roll clearance and function status information. In particular, the desired and the actual kernel processor clearance will be displayed.

While operating in automatic kernel processor adjust mode, the following functionality will be implemented:

The system will first (and then continuously) check for conditions that will interrupt the automatic kernel processor adjust process. Amongst other things, the following operations will provoke the interruption of the automatic kernel processor adjust process:

  • Changing engine speed while kernel processor adjust process is active
  • Pressing the kernel processor adjust mode abort switch
  • Pressing the quick stop switch

If none of the above conditions exist, the automatic kernel processor adjust function will continue the process by determining what direction the rolls have to be moved on each side of the kernel processor in order to achieve the selected clearance. In the next step the electronic system will accordingly control the direction of rotation of the left and the right kernel processor motor. While driving the kernel processor motors, the electronic system simultaneously monitors both position sensors to make sure the kernel processor clearance will be consistent over the entire roll width. This ensures that the clearances on the outer right and left side of the kernel processor are the same. When the calculated clearance matches the selected clearance, the electronic system will terminate the automatic process and appropriate information will be provided by the performance monitor.

Kernel Processor Drive Belt Tension Control

If the system is configured to support kernel processor belt tension control, the belt tension control functionality will be activated if the following conditions are met:

  • The engine is running
  • The road safety switch in field operating mode

For kernel processor belt tension control, the following functionality is implemented: If the engine is running and the cutterhead is not turning in reverse direction, the electronic system controls a hydraulic cylinder in order to tighten the kernel processor drive belt. While in this state, the electronic system will deny the main clutch to be enagaged for a short period of time. This is to make sure that the kernel processor belt is securely tightened before the cutterhead is engaged. Denying the main clutch engagement in this state represents another main clutch control interlock (main clutch disable during kernel processor belt tension delay) implemented by the electronic system. During automatic knife sharpen and stationary knife adjust operation, the kernel processor belt tension control feature will release the kernel processor belt. As a result the kernel processor rolls will not be driven in reverse direction.

Calibration and Diagnosis - Automatic Kernel Processor Clearance Adjustment

For correct functionality of the automatic kernel processor adjust process, the system has to be calibrated.

To calibrate whether a kernel processor is installed or not installed use the following address:

  • Kernel processor control - Address SPF 104, seventh digit

The calibration of the automatic kernel processor adjust function is implemented by entering the initial clearance in an on-board diagnostic address. The initial clearance is a reference value for the kernel processor clearance calculation and the default value for the initial clearance is 1 mm (0.039 in.).

To calibrate a kernel processor initial clearance use the following address:

  • Kernel processor initial clearance - Address SPF 106

IMPORTANT: The system needs to be recalibrated whenever the rolls were manually adjusted and the clearance cannot be set to 1 mm (0.039 in.) for some reason. In this state, define a new value for the initial clearance which represents the actual clearance width manually set.

Furthermore the on-board diagnostic provides status information in diagnostic addresses for the automatic kernel processor adjust mode switch, the kernel processor adjust mode abort switch and the outputs that control the kernel processor motors.

To calibrate manual control of the kernel processor clearance with input control knob use the following address:

  • Control the kernel processor clearance with input control knob - Address SPF 101
