Automatic Lubrication System (Option)

Lubrication Control Functions

The system provides a grease lubrication pump driven by an electric motor, lubrication lines, grease distributors and an electronic timer implemented in the metal detector control unit for the control of lubrication cycles.

The following preconditions have to be met for the activation of the automatic lubrication control system:

  • Road safety switch in field position
  • Main clutch engaged

Once the system is enabled (power is supplied), the metal detector control unit turns on the grease pump at regular on and off intervals according to the operator settings in the corresponding on-board diagnostic addresses. Furthermore the lubrication control system provides the capability to manually initiate an intermediate lubrication cycle (especially for test purposes).

Standby Mode

The electronic lubrication control unit enters the standby mode when the main clutch switch is activated and this state is sent to the metal detector control unit. The electronic system reads the lubrication status on the CAN Bus and provides the corresponding status information on the corner post display. In standby mode the lubrication system is ready to operate.

Automatic Lubrication Mode

The automatic lubrication mode is automatically entered when the configured off-time has expired. The metal detector control unit allows to set off-time periods between predefined limits (10 to 60 minutes). Furthermore, lubrication periods (on-time) can be set between predefined limits too (10 to 60 minutes). While operating in automatic lubrication mode, the metal detector control unit turns on the lubrication pump for the configured lubrication period. During automatic lubrication mode, the status information is transmitted from the metal detector control unit to the CAN Bus to indicate the status in the corner post display. If the metal detector control unit is shut off during lubrication or off-time, the metal detector control unit memorizes the remaining on- or off-time, and continues the automatic control of the grease lubrication pump at the point where it was interrupted.

Calibration and Diagnosis

To calibrate the automatic lubrication system, use the following addresses:

  • Automatic lubrication system is installed / not installed - Address SIG 104
  • Automatic lubrication on-time - Address SIG 105
  • Automatic lubrication off-time - Address SIG 106

Pump Unit

An electric pump supplies grease to a distribution system at regular intervals. This distribution unit is then set to deliver different volumes of grease to each grease point depending on the required lubrication interval.

A circular grease reservoir of 4 kg (8.8 lb) capacity is equipped with a see-through wall so that a visual check of the grease level can be made. A rotating arm, inside the reservoir forces grease into the pump chamber through a perforated plate to eliminate air bubbles. A rubber wipe blade on the charging arm ensures that the operator can always make a visual check on the grease level.

The 0.12 cm 3 (0.0073 cu.in.) fixed displacement pump for greasing the forage harvester and the optional 0.04 - 0.12 cm 3 (0.0024 - 0.0073 cu.in.) variable displacement pump for greasing header rotate at 15 rpm and are capable of generating up to 30000 kPa (300 bar; 4350 psi) pumping pressure.

The unit is powered from a 12 V electrical supply, energized by the vehicle main clutch switch.

If a greasing cycle is interrupted by switching the main clutch off, it will be completed when the main clutch is switched on the next time.

The operator may initiate a greasing cycle immediately by pressing button (A).

Unit charging (filling) system

Normally this is done via a standard grease fitting, allowing the unit to be filled with a standard grease gun, or via a quick-release coupling, allowing air-operated greasers to be used for a faster filling.

NOTE: Top up the grease reservoir of the automatic lubrication system once a week.

Distributors

The grease is delivered to a bank of primary distributors. Each distributor in the primary distributor block delivers to a bank of secondary distributors, which meter the grease to the grease points.

The distributors are supplied with grease progressively. Each grease point is greased in turn once during each cycle.

The amount of grease delivered is determined by the diameter of the piston in each distributor. The size of the distributor for each grease point is in turn determined by the greasing interval and the volume of grease required for manual greasing. Four different volumes are used:

  • 0.025 cm 3 (0.0015 cu.in.) per greasing cycle
  • 0.045 cm 3 (0.0027 cu.in.) per greasing cycle
  • 0.075 cm 3 (0.0046 cu.in.) per greasing cycle
  • 0.105 cm 3 (0.0064 cu.in.) per greasing cycle

Every grease point is greased during each greasing cycle.

NOTE: If the forage harvester is equipped with an automatic lubrication system, some lubricating points are supplied with grease automatically. This does not apply to lubricating points requiring a 250- or 500-hour service interval, or to lubricating points on rotating components, with the exception of compressor mounting (250 hours) and deflector pulley bearing of main drive (500 hours).

Indicator icon indicates that the system is operational after engaging the main clutch (for approx. 2 seconds). The indicator light will flash during the lubrication cycle.

When the forage harvester is shut off, the grease or rest cycle will be interrupted and all relevant data will be stored. When the main clutch is engaged the next time, the program will continue to run, starting at the point of interruption. An additional lube impulse may be started at any time by pressing button (A). When pressing button (A), the stored cycle time will be deleted, i.e. grease or rest cycle time will start at zero again.

Checking System for Proper Operation

To check system operation, initiate 2 or 3 additional lube impulses to determine whether grease is supplied to all lubricating points.

If the system is blocked (but not damaged), grease will escape at relief valve (C). This is a safety feature which allows system checks.
