Automatic / Manual Stationary Knife Adjustment

IMPORTANT:
Automatic stationary knife adjustment may be stopped by pressing QUICK-STOP switch on multi-function lever.

knives are not sharpened. This will increase life of cutterhead knives and reduce power requirements.
The Self-Propelled Forage Harvester is equipped with an electronic control of the stationary knife clearance. The stationary knife adjust function complies with the following requirements:
-
Manual and automatic clearance control mode
-
Fully automated process in automatic mode
-
Configurable adjust parameters (calibration capabilities)
-
Compensation for mechanical play in adjust mechanism

Stationary Knife Clearance And Knock Sensors
The stationary knife adjust process ensures that the stationary knife clearance is correctly set over the entire width of the cutterhead (the stationary knife is parallel to the cutterhead).
IMPORTANT:
Never modify the bracket for the knock sensors mechanically.
Two knock sensors are mounted on a bracket. The shape and mounting location of this bracket is crucial for stationary knife adjust performance since it will provide a defined transmission behaviour for the stationary knife vibrations (acceleration) whenever the stationary knife contacts the rotating cutterhead.

Automatic Stationary Knife Adjust Mode
The following conditions have to be met for the activation of the automatic stationary knife adjust function:
-
The engine is running
-
The road safety switch in field operating mode
-
The main clutch is switched off
-
Four-speed LOC transmission in neutral
-
Four-speed LOC - If a kernel processor or power chute is installed, drive belt must be locked (put out of operation), see "Locking Device - Kernel Processor / Power Chute Main Drive (Four-Speed LOC Only)" in Kernel Processor or Power Chute sections.
Automatic stationary knife adjust mode will be entered by pressing the stationary knife adjust mode switch (A). The automatic stationary knife adjust function is a two step process that first sets a large clearance and then sets the proper stationary knife clearance.
The following operations will provoke the interruption of the automatic stationary knife adjust process:
-
Changing engine speed while stationary knife adjust process is active
-
Pressing the stationary knife adjust mode abort switch
-
Pressing the quick stop switch
IVLOC Only
For vehicles equipped with an IVLOC the stationary knife adjust function will:
-
First look for current engine speed
-
And then control the cutterhead reverse speed (350 rpm) (factory setting)
Four-Speed LOC Only
For vehicles equipped with a four-speed LOC , the stationary knife adjust function will:
-
First verify that the transmission is in neutral (2 LOC neutral switches)
-
Request a fixed engine speed of 1650 rpm
|
|
|
|

|
-
And then turn on the hydraulic reverser motor and the e-clutch to turn the cutterhead in reverse.
On the four-speed LOC configuration, the request for a fixed engine speed is necessary because the cutterhead reverse speed cannot be electronically controlled and rather depends directly on current engine speed. As a result, for vehicles with a Four-speed LOC, the automatic stationary knife adjust function will be performed at a fixed engine speed (300 rpm).

IVLOC And Four-Speed LOC
If the required cutterhead reverse speed is reached, the left stationary knife motor (A) will be turned on so that the stationary knife moves towards the cutterhead. If the stationary knife is contacting the rotating cutterhead, knock signals will be generated by the knock sensors. If a preset knock signal threshold is reached, the electronic system will control the left stationary knife motor (with inversed direction of rotation) so that the stationary knife can be moved away from the cutterhead. In this situation the knock signal will decrease and when it disappears, the left stationary knife motor will further be controlled based on pulse signal information from the position sensor of the left stationary knife motor. Opposed to the knock signal based adjust process, this process will implement a distance based adjust functionality. If the motor has been driven for a certain distance which is measured by number of pulses, the electronic system will turn the left stationary knife motor off. After the left stationary knife motor has been turned off, the right stationary knife motor will be controlled similarly (as described for the left stationary knife motor). Applying the control logic described above, the stationary knife adjust function will alternately control the motors several times and while adjusting, actual process status information will be displayed by the performance monitor.
If the pulse signals of the motors are missing, time based adjustment will be performed and the operator will be informed by the corresponding Diagnostic Trouble Code.
This first process is called "large clearance setting process". The following process implemented by the automatic stationary knife adjust function is called "small clearance setting". The small clearance setting process will be similar to the large clearance setting process except that different knock signal thresholds and pulse presets will be applied for the control of the stationary knife motors. While setting the small clearance, actual process status information will also be displayed. If the automatic stationary knife adjust function has set the proper stationary knife clearance, it will automatically terminate the process. The termination of the process will also be indicated by turning off appropriate icons and status information on the performance monitor.

For the four-speed LOC the automatic stationary knife adjust function will request low engine idle when it has terminated the process.
Once the process has started, the system will continuously check for conditions that will interrupt the process. If such conditions do not exist, it will continue the process. If conditions exist, it will abort the process and generate appropriate diagnostic information that will be displayed by the digital infotrak monitor.
On the four-speed LOC configuration, the automatic stationary knife adjust process can be aborted by:
-
Pressing the manual stationary knife adjust mode abort switch
-
Pressing the quick stop switch
On the IVLOC configuration, the automatic stationary knife adjust process can be aborted by:
-
Changing engine speed while adjust process is active
-
Pressing the manual stationary knife adjust mode abort switch
-
Pressing the quick stop switch

Manual Stationary Knife Away Mode
IMPORTANT:
Thoroughly clean area between smooth roll and stationary knife before stationary knife is set back - in direction of forward travel (X) - to ensure that stationary knife movement is not impaired.
For the activation of the manual stationary knife away mode, the following conditions have to be met:
-
Ignition switch in IGN position
-
The road safety switch in field operating mode
X-Direction of travel and stationary knife movement with manual adjustment

The manual stationary knife away mode will be activated by pressing and holding down the manual stationary knife adjust mode abort switch (A). If the manual stationary knife away request has been accepted by the electronic system, the performance monitor will display the appropriate icons and status information. While in this mode the electronic system will simultaneously turn on the left and right stationary knife motor as long as the switch is pressed. If the manual stationary knife away switch is released, the stationary knife motors will be turned off and the manual stationary knife away mode will be disabled. As opposed to automatic stationary knife adjust mode, the cutterhead will not be controlled in reverse direction while implementing manual stationary knife away mode.
