Automatic Knife Sharpening

The automatic knife sharpening function enables the operator to control the Self-Propelled Forage Harvester at a maximum level of efficiency.

The knife sharpening function implements a home position mode and an automatic knife sharpening mode. The following conditions have to be met for the activation of the automatic knife sharpening function:

  • The engine is running
  • The road safety switch in field operating mode
  • The main clutch is switched off and cutterhead not spinning in forward direction
  • Four-speed LOC transmission in neutral
  • Four-speed LOC - If a kernel processor or power chute is installed, drive belt must be locked (put out of operation), see "Locking Device - Kernel Processor / Power Chute Main Drive (Four-Speed LOC Only)" in Kernel Processor or Power Chute sections.

For the activation of the home position function, the following preconditions have to be met:

  • Ignition switch in IGN position
  • The road safety switch in field operating mode

Home Position Mode

Before activating the home position function make sure that the stone is not mechanically blocked. The home position function will be activated by pressing and holding down the home position switch (A). The appropriate icons and status LED will be turned on by the performance monitor when the home position request has been accepted by the electronic system. While in this mode the stone sweep motor will be controlled so that the sharpening stone is moved to its calibrated home position.

Furthermore when the sharpening stone reaches its home position, the home position mode will automatically be disabled and the performance monitor will provide the appropriate information.

Automatic Knife Sharpening Mode

Automatic knife sharpen mode will be entered by pressing the automatic knife sharpen mode switch (A). If the electronic system has accepted the automatic knife sharpen request, appropriate icons and status information will be displayed by the performance monitor. The automatic knife sharpen function will be a two step process that first implements knife sharpening and then knife burnishing.

There are different functionalities for vehicles equipped with an IVLOC and vehicles equipped with a four-speed LOC.

Four-Speed LOC

For the four-speed LOC configuration, the automatic knife sharpen function will request a fixed engine speed of 1650 rpm so the cutterhead can be turned with the required cutterhead reverse speed.

IVLOC

If the vehicle is equipped with an IVLOC, the automatic knife sharpen function will allow to perform the process at any operator selectable engine speed. If the default cutterhead reverse speed (or the fixed cutterhead reverse speed for a four-speed LOC) is reached, the electronic system will control the sharpen door motor. The sharpen door motor will be turned off when the position sensor is indicating that the door reached the calibrated open position.

The stone sweep motor will move the sharpening stone to the calibrated position. While in this mode the sharpening stone will first be moved between the stone lowering position and the sweep in position (sharpening cycle). During burnishing cycle the sharpening stone will be moved between the sweep in and the finish position. During burnishing cycles, the stone will not be lowered towards the cutterhead.

Operation

After pressing switch (A) the number of cycles currently selected is displayed at the performance monitor during knife sharpen process. While the current number of cycles is being displayed, change the current number of cycles by turning the input control knob (B). Furthermore it is possible to select whether this new number shall be permanently stored or if it shall only be considered as temporary. While changing the number of cycles as well as while performing the automatic knife sharpen process, appropriate icons and status information are displayed by the performance monitor. If the burnishing cycles have been performed, the automatic knife sharpen function will automatically terminate the process by controlling the stone sweep motor such that the sharpening stone will be moved to its calibrated home position. After that the sharpen door motor will move the sharpen door to its calibrated closed position. The performance monitor will turn off appropriate icons and status information to indicate that the automatic knife sharpen process has been terminated.

For the four-speed LOC configuration the automatic knife sharpen function will additionally request low idle when it has terminated the process.

Once the process has started, the system will continuously check for conditions that will interrupt the process. If such conditions do not exist, it will continue the process. If conditions exist, it will abort the process and generate appropriate diagnostic information that will be displayed by the digital info-trak monitor.

On the four-speed LOC configuration, the automatic knife sharpen function can be aborted by:

  • Pressing the home position switch
  • Pressing the quick stop switch

On the IVLOC configuration, the automatic knife sharpen function can be aborted by:

  • Changing engine speed while sharpen process is active
  • Pressing the home position switch
  • Pressing the quick stop switch

Calibration and Diagnosis

The automatic control of the sharpen door motor and the stone sweep motor requires the calibration of two sharpen door positions (door open and close) and four sharpening stone positions.

To calibrate the sharpen door positions use the following addresses:

  • Sharpening door is installed- Address SPF 104
  • Sharpening door closed position - Address SPF 108
  • Sharpening door open position - Address SPF 109

To calibrate the sharpen stone positions use the following addresses:

  • Sharpening stone home position - Address SPF 111
  • Sharpening stone left cutterhead position - Address SPF 112
  • Sharpening stone right cutterhead position - Address SPF 113
  • Sharpening stone advance position - Address SPF 114

The system needs to be recalibrated whenever the sharpen door motor or the stone sweep motor is replaced, or if a mechanical modification on the skid becomes necessary.

Furthermore the on-board diagnostic allows to read out current knife sharpen operator settings as well as status information for the automatic knife sharpen switch and the home position switch.
