Evaluating Cleaning

The grain in the grain tank should be clean enough to earn the best possible price on the market. Losses in the cleaner should be minimal and within acceptable levels.

Grain loss in the cleaner can be caused by:

Strong Air Stream

Indicated by grain blown beyond the screens and small amount of straw in the chaffer.

The solution is to reduce the fan speed.

Weak Air Stream or Chaffer Too Narrow

Here grain loss can be due to overthreshing (high cylinder speed and inadequate separation of concave and cylinder), and can be caused by a weak air stream or small chaffer opening.

Solution:

Check the straw on the straw walkers. If it is broken or crushed, the cylinder and concave need adjustment.

If the straw is intact, the fan speed will have to be higher to hold the straw suspended and allow the grain to fall through the screens. Alternatively, the chaffer could be opened slightly.

NOTE: Always review results before continuing with adjustments.
