Fundamentals of Combine Operation

ZCQF7852

The reel (1) collects the crop and moves it toward the cutterbar (2) to be cut.

The crop is then directed to the cutting platform auger (3).

The auger moves the crop to the center of the header where the retractable pickups move it to the feeder house (4).

The feeder house carries the crop to the cylinder (5).

The cylinder and concave (6) thresh or separate the crop.

The beater (7) takes the larger straw from the cylinder and concave and throws it over the straw walkers (8).

The threshed grain, fine straw and some tailings (ear tips or husks) fall through the openings in the concave to the grain pan (9).

The alternating motion of the straw walkers separates the remaining grain from the straw. The grain falls through the straw walker openings (screens) into the troughs and from there passes to the grain pan. Straw leaves the combine via the straw chopper (10).

Threshed grain and fines are carried by the grain pan to the cleaner which consists of the chaffer and grain screen (11) and the fan (12). The fan blows out the fines and the clean grain falls through the screens.

The clean grain elevator (13) leads to the loading auger (14) which carries the grain to the grain tank (15).

Any tailings (ear tips or husks) fall through the upper screen extension (16) and are carried back to the separator (cylinder and concave) by the tailings elevator (17) for rethreshing.
