Harvesting Small Grain

When harvesting small grain or seeds (wheat, barley and fodder seeds) the concave to cylinder spacing should be set so that the grains are completely separated from the straw or stalk without excessively crushing the latter. This can be judged by examining the straw on the straw walkers.

An opening that is too small will grind the straw and will require more engine power. An opening that is too large will result in inadequate threshing.

After adjusting the concave, regulate the cylinder speed to obtain maximum threshing with minimum damage to the crop. If the crop is damaged, the spacing between the cylinder and concave should not be increased. Instead, reduce the cylinder speed. Cylinder to concave spacing has very little effect on crop damage in these cases.

NOTE: See the charts in "Combine Settings" in this Section for initial adjustment values.
