Chaffer

The chaffer is designed to act as a preliminary cleaner. Grain and smaller, heavier pieces of straw should pass through it.

If the chaffer opening is too large, the grain screen will be overloaded. This is indicated by an excessive amount of straw in the tailings.

If the chaffer opening is too small there will be too much grain in the tailings and, therefore, a great deal of cracked grain in the grain tank. Losses behind the combine will be even greater.
