Changing Engine Oil and Filter, John Deere POWERTECH® 8.1 L Engine
IMPORTANT:
Observe the utmost cleanliness when installing replacement filter element.
Run the engine for approx. 5 minutes to heat up oil. Then shut engine off.
Drain oil while it is still warm.
Remove plug (A) and drain oil from engine crankcase.
Remove full flow filter element (B).
Dispose of filter packing. Clean mounting pad. Apply a thin coat of oil to new sealing ring and install it together with the new oil filter. When sealing ring is just touching the mounting surface, tighten filter manually by another 1/2 to 3/4 of a revolution. Do NOT overtighten filter.
Install drain plug.
Fill crankcase with correct engine oil (C).
Capacity (with filter change): 28.5 L (7.5 U.S. gal)
NOTE:
The actual capacity may vary slightly from the figure stated above. Fill crankcase until the oil is up to the upper mark on the dipstick. Do not overfill!
IMPORTANT:
Open disconnect point (X) at injection pump immediately after completing oil and/or filter change and crank engine for 30 seconds by means of starter motor. This will ensure proper lubrication of all engine parts during the starting procedure. Make connections at disconnect point (X).
Start engine and check for leaks.
Shut off engine and wait 10 minutes before checking the oil level. The oil should still be up to the upper mark on the dipstick.
