General Information

    Bleed the fuel system:

  • After every filter change
  • Whenever the fuel tank has run dry
  • After repair work on the fuel system
  • If the engine has been idle for a longer period

Water Trap, John Deere POWERTECH ® 8.1 L Engine

The fuel tank must be full.

Shut-off valve is open.

Slacken off water trap bleed screw (A) and trap the fuel that flows out.

The fuel must be free of bubbles as it emerges.

Close bleed screw (A) again.

First bleed the water trap.

Then slacken off bleed screw (A).

Pump hand primer (B) at fuel transfer pump (C) up and down until the fuel flows out free from air bubbles at the bleed screw (A).

Then retighten bleed screw.

NOTE: If no resistance is felt when moving the primer piston, turn engine over with starting motor to change position of primer pump cam.

Fuel Filter, John Deere POWERTECH ® 12.5 L Engine

Whenever the fuel system has been opened up for service (lines disconnected or filters removed), it will be necessary to bleed air from the system.

Drain water and contaminants from clear water separator sediment bowl.

Loosen fuel filter outlet line (A).

Pump primer (B) on primary filter until a steady flow of fuel (without bubbles) comes out of connection.

Continue pumping hand primer and simultaneously tighten outlet line to 25 N·m (18 lb-ft). Do not overtighten.

Start engine and run at high idle for 3-5 minutes.
