Metal Detector Troubleshooting

Symptom Problem Solution

Numerous trips without finding metal

Detected metal is too small to be found

A small piece of wire can trip the detector. Such metal is frequently hard to find

Objects containing iron lodged in or wrapped around feed rolls

Remove any foreign material lodged in the feed rolls

Locking pawl trips when changing from "reverse" to "forward" operation

Adjust locking pawl

Incorrect weld added to one of the front feed rolls

This is not a normal weld situation. Use stainless steel weld rod

Defective locking pawl magnetic switch

A metal detector trip can be caused by a pawl magnetic switch which does not retract completely. Replace locking pawl magnetic switch

Feed roll shaft or one of the rear feed rolls is magnetized

See your John Deere dealer

Upper or lower feed roll assembly damaged, or bearings worn

Repair or replace as necessary

Symptom Problem Solution

Detector sensor harness is damaged

See your John Deere dealer for repair

Numerous trips without finding metal

Loose connections or damaged wiring in main power supply circuit

Power interrupt light will come on when power to the metal detector module has been interrupted or the voltage has dropped low enough to trip the metal detector

NOTE: The light will be on when power is first turned on. The light goes off when the metal detector is reset

Use the following procedure to diagnose power interruptions:

Clean and tighten connections at plug, relay box and the 9-pin connector at electronic box.

Repair or replace defective power supply wiring or battery charging components.

NOTE: A defective locking pawl magnetic switch or locking pawl assembly can also cause a power interruption by tripping a circuit breaker in the relay box.
