Service ElectricalChecking the BatteryˇKeep battery and terminals clean.
ˇRecharge, if necessary, at 6-10 amperes for 1 hour. Removing and Installing the Battery
Removing:1. Park machine safely, (See Parking Safely in the Safety Section). 3. Disconnect negative (-) battery cable (A). 4. Push red cover (B) away from positive (+) battery cable and remove cable from battery. Installing:If installing original battery, follow removal steps in reverse order. If installing replacement battery, use the following procedure. Installing Replacement Battery (Service Part #TY6191)NOTE: The replacement battery is different than the battery that comes with your machine. Be sure you have all the necessary parts to install the replacement battery. 1. Install battery cap, so that the drain is on the negative (-) terminal side of the battery. 3. Install drain hose on battery cap (A) using a small hose clamp. See your John Deere dealer to order drain hose (M78562) and clamp (TY22462). 4. Route drain hose on All GX85 Riding Mowers and SX85 Riding Mowers with Serial Number 095001 and After: a. Put hose through battery side of slot in rear of seat support (B). b. Fasten hose to left-hand shroud support bracket with tie strap (C). 5. Route drain hose on SX85 Riding Mowers with Serial Number Range 085001 - 095000: a. Route hose between fuel tank side of slot in rear of seat support and the variator hub (D). b. Route hose out left-hand side of frame. It is not necessary to use a tie strap. 6. Follow removal steps in reverse order to secure and connect battery. Clean Battery and Terminals
1. Disconnect and remove battery. 2. Wash battery with solution of four tablespoons of baking soda to one gallon of water. Be careful not to get the soda solution into the cells. 3. Rinse the battery with plain water and dry. 4. Clean terminals and battery cable ends with wire brush until bright. 5. Apply petroleum jelly or silicone spray to terminal to prevent corrosion. Using Booster Battery1. Connect positive (+) booster cable to booster battery (A) positive (+) post (C). 2. Connect the other end of positive (+) booster cable to the disabled vehicle battery (B) positive (+) post (D). 3. Connect negative (-) booster cable to booster battery negative (-) post (E). 4. Connect the other end (F) of negative (-) booster cable to a metal part of the disabled machine frame away from battery. 5. Start the engine of the disabled machine and run machine for several minutes. 6. Carefully disconnect the booster cables in the exact reverse order: negative cable first and then the positive cable. Replacing Fuse1. Park machine safely and lift seat. (See Parking Safely in the Safety Section.) 2. Pull defective fuse (A) out of socket. 3. Check metal clip in fuse window and discard fuse if clip is broken. |
