Transmission Oil

NOTE: Tractor is filled with John Deere Low Viscosity HY-GARDŽ (J20D) transmission oil at the factory. DO NOT mix oils.

These tractors are equipped with an internal wet disc brake transmission. Use only Low Viscosity HY-GARDŽ (J20D) transmission oil. DO NOT use type "F" automatic transmission fluid.

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Use John Deere Low Viscosity HY-GARDŽ (J20D) transmission oil to reduce transmission noise and to increase response time for the hydraulics and power steering.

ˇ DO NOT drain or change hydrostatic transmission fluid.

ˇ See your John Deere dealer for service.


John Deere Low Viscosity HY-GARDŽ (J20D) transmission oil is specially formulated to provide maximum protection against mechanical wear, corrosion, and foaming.

Checking Transmission Oil Level

1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY Section.)

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Hot hydraulic oil will expand and show incorrect oil level. Check reservoir tank:

ˇ When oil is cold.

ˇ Engine not running.


2. Let engine cool.

3. Check oil level on reservoir (A). Oil level should be visible in the sight window.

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Dirt and debris in hydraulic oil may cause damage to the hydraulic system.

ˇ DO NOT open oil reservoir cap unless absolutely necessary.

ˇ Clean area around oil reservoir cap before removing.


4. If oil level is not visible in the sight window, add J20D transmission oil to bring oil level to the FULL line.

a. Lift seat.

b. Clean around reservoir filler cap (B).

c. Remove oil fill cap.

d. Remove foam filter in oil reservoir neck.

e. Add oil to bring oil level to the FULL line.

f. Replace foam filter.

g. Install and tighten oil fill cap.

h. Lower seat.

5. Start engine.

6. Operate tractor forward and in reverse several times.

7. Park machine on level surface. Stop engine and check oil level again.
