Using Troubleshooting Chart

If you are experiencing a problem that is not listed in this chart, see your John Deere dealer for service.

When you have checked all the possible causes listed and you are still experiencing the problem, see your John Deere dealer.

Engine

If

Check

ˇ Engine Hard To Start or Engine Will Not Start

ˇ Fuel tank is empty.

ˇ Fuel system leaks.

ˇ Starter relay connections loose or corroded.

ˇ Low battery voltage.

ˇ Wrong fuel.

ˇ Water, dirt, or air in fuel system:

ˇ Check fuel filter. Drain, flush, fill, bleed system.

ˇ Dirty or faulty injectors.

ˇ Operator off the seat and parking brake is not locked.

ˇ Fuel shut-off solenoid failure.

ˇ Loose or corroded electrical connections

ˇ Forward or reverse pedal MUST BE in the neutral position.

ˇ Mow/Transport lever MUST BE in transport position.

ˇ Engine Runs Irregularly or Stalls

ˇ Faulty thermostat.

ˇ Replace fuel filter element.

ˇ Water, dirt, or air in fuel system.

ˇ Drain, flush, fill, bleed.

ˇ Wrong fuel.

ˇ Plugged air intake screen or air cleaner.

ˇ Air restriction indicator.

ˇ Faulty water temperature indicator or sender.

ˇ Air restriction indicator.

ˇ Engine Uses Too Much Oil

ˇ Plugged intake screen or air cleaner.

ˇ Wrong engine oil.

ˇ Oil leaks.

ˇ Plugged breather.

ˇ No O-ring on drain plug.

ˇ Excessive Vibration

ˇ Engine speed too slow.

ˇ Driveshaft worn.

ˇ Throttle linkage out of adjustment.

ˇ Will Not Move With Engine Running

ˇ Park brake locked.

ˇ Transmission oil low.

ˇ Machine Creeps With Engine Running And Travel Pedals In The Neutral Position

ˇ Linkage needs adjustment.

ˇ Park brake not locked.

ˇ Engine Stops When Forward Or Reverse Travel Pedal Is Depressed

Electrical System

ˇ Battery Indicator Stays On When Engine Is Running

ˇ Starter Turns Slowly

Brakes And Steering

ˇ Adjust linkage.

ˇ Toe-in needs adjustment.


Cutting Units

If

Check

ˇ Poor Cutting

ˇ Reel-to-bed knife out of adjustment.

ˇ Reel dull.

ˇ Ground speed too high. Engine speed too slow (not at rated 300025 rpm).

ˇ Bed knife and/or reel grooved, ribbed, or rifled due to reel-to-bed knife adjustment too tight or running machine without grass in the reels.

ˇ Corrugated Or Ribbed Appearance To Turf.

ˇ Ground speed too high or engine rpm too slow (not at rated 300025 rpm).

ˇ Grass Buildup On Rolls

ˇ Scraper out of adjustment.

ˇ Mowers Will Not Raise/Lower

ˇ Not enough oil in reservoir.

ˇ Double gear pump does not rotate.

ˇ No output from pump.

ˇ Broken or shorted wiring.

ˇ Defective solenoid.

ˇ Control valve spool does not move.

ˇ Reels Will Not Rotate

ˇ Reels too tight against bed knife.

ˇ Not enough oil in reservoir.

ˇ Double gear pump does not rotate.

ˇ No output from pump.

ˇ Broken or shorted wiring.

ˇ Defective solenoid.

ˇ Control valve spool does not move.

ˇ Mower Reels Squeal

ˇ Operating reel without grass (grass cuttings lubricate reel and bed knife).

ˇ Reel-to-bed knife gap is too close.

ˇ Reels Turning Backward

ˇ Reels turning at high rpm.

ˇ Backlapping knob not returned to forward position.

ˇ Oil Leaks From Cutting Unit Motor

ˇ Motor seal leaks.
