Poor Engine Performance

· Dirt in fuel system or fuel is old. Replace fuel with fresh stabilized fuel. Obtain fuel from another supplier before suspecting machine problems. Suppliers blend fuels differently and changing suppliers will generally solve any performance problems.

· Fuel blended for cold or warm climate may contribute to performance problems if used in the wrong season, especially if fuel is stored for several months or more. Obtain fresh fuel.

Engine Will Not Start

(Starter Engages and Turns Engine)

· Fuel shutoff valve is in off position.

· Out of fuel or improper fuel.

· Plugged fuel filter.

· Electrical problem - See Electrical Troubleshooting Section

Engine Is Hard To Start

· Plugged fuel filter.

· Stale or improper fuel

Engine Runs Unevenly

· Fuel line or fuel filter plugged.

· Stale or dirty fuel.

· Fuel injector clogged.

· Air cleaner element plugged.

Engine Misses Under Load

· Stale or dirty fuel.

· Plugged fuel filter.

Engine Overheats

· Engine air intake screen plugged.

· Engine coolant level is low.

· Engine oil level is low or too high.

· Engine operated too long at a slow idle speed.

Engine Will Not Idle

· Fuel level too low.

· Air cleaner element dirty.

· Operator raising off the seat without park brake locked.

Engine Knocks

· Stale fuel.

· Engine overloaded.

· Low engine speed.

Engine Stops Or Misses When Operating On Hillsides

· Fuel tank less than half full of fuel.

· Operator raising off of the seat.

Engine Backfires

· Operator raising off of the seat.

Engine Loses Power

· Engine overheating.

· Too much oil in engine.

· Dirty air cleaner.

· Travel speed is too fast for conditions.

· Improper fuel.

Black Exhaust Smoke

· Air filter element is dirty.

Starter Does Not Engage

· Park brake is not locked and operator is not on seat.

· PTO switch is in on position.

· Hydrostatic pedals are not in centered neutral position.

· Battery terminals are corroded.

· Battery not charged.

· 15 main fuse is blown.

Battery Will Not Charge

· Dead cell in the battery.

· Battery cables and terminals are dirty.

· Low engine speed or excessive idling.

Lights Do Not Work

· Light plug disconnected.

· Loose or burned out bulb.

Vibrates Too Much or Rattles Excessively

· Engine cover not latched closed.

· Electrical panel not latched closed.

Machine Will Not Move With Engine Running

· Park brake locked.

· Range shift lever is in neutral position.

Mower Deck Plugs With Grass

· Grass too wet or too long.

· Engine not being run at full throttle while mowing.

· Rear of deck too low.

Patches Of Grass Uncut

· Travel speed too fast.

· Engine should be at full throttle.

· Dull blades.

· Cutting height set too high.

Belt Slipping

· Mower belt tension not set correctly.

· Debris in sheaves.

· Worn belt.

Mower Blades Do Not Stop

· Belt routed incorrectly.

· Mower belt tension needs adjustment.

Too Much Vibration

· Debris on mower deck or in sheaves.

· Damaged drive belt.

· Damaged sheaves or sheaves out of alignment.

· Blades out of balance.

Uneven Cut

· Check procedures on Adjusting Mower Deck Level.

· Travel speed too fast.

· Blades are dull.

· Check tire pressure.

Blades Scalping Grass

· Turning speed too fast.

· Ridges in terrain.

· Rough or uneven terrain.

· Low tire pressure.

· Cutting too low.

· Bent blade(s).

Mower Loads Down Tractor

· Engine should be at full throttle.

· Travel speed too fast.

· Debris wrapped around mower spindles.

· Check procedure on Adjusting Mower Level Front-to-Rear.

· Grass conditions.

· Cutting height set too low.

Uneven Clipping Distribution

· Cutting height set too low.

· Mowing too fast.

· Grass too wet.
