Using Troubleshooting Chart

If you are experiencing a problem that is not listed in this chart, see your John Deere dealer for service.

When you have checked all the possible causes listed and you are still experiencing the problem, see your John Deere dealer.

Engine

If

Check

Engine Will Not Start

ˇ Brake not pushed down.

ˇ Brake not pushed down.

ˇ PTO switch in ON position.

ˇ Upper (switch) fuse blown.

ˇ Fuel pump fuse blown.

ˇ Spark plug wire(s) loose or disconnected.

ˇ Spark plug(s) not gapped correctly.

Engine Is Hard to Start

ˇ Loose or corroded electrical connections.

ˇ Stale or dirty fuel.

ˇ Spark plug(s) is fouled. Check choke position.

ˇ Faulty spark plug(s).

ˇ Spark plug(s) not gapped correctly.

ˇ Gummed or plugged fuel filter.

Engine Stops When Brake Is Disengaged

ˇ Seat switch not engaged.

ˇ Seat switch disconnected or broken.

Engine Misses Under Load

ˇ Faulty spark plug(s).

ˇ Spark plug not gapped correctly.

ˇ Stale or dirty fuel.

Engine Runs Unevenly

Tractor Will Not Move With Engine Running

ˇ Parking brake locked.

ˇ Transaxle hydraulic oil level low.

ˇ Free-wheeling lever ENGAGED.


Steering

Steering Not Working Correctly

ˇ Improper tire inflation pressure.

ˇ Transaxle hydraulic oil level is low.


Mower

If

Check

Mower (or other attachment) Stops When REVERSE foot pedal is depressed and Attachment Is Engaged

ˇ Normal condition.


Electrical

If

Check

Starter Does Not Work Or Will Not Turn Engine

ˇ Brake pedal not down.

ˇ PTO switch in ON position.

ˇ Battery terminals corroded.

ˇ Upper (switch) fuse blown.

ˇ Battery dead or low charge.

Starter Turns Slowly

ˇ Low battery output or power.

ˇ Engine oil viscosity too high.

ˇ Loose or corroded connections.

Battery Will Not Charge

ˇ Dead cell in battery.

ˇ Low engine speed or excessive idling.

ˇ Battery cables and terminals dirty.

Battery Discharge Indicator Stays On With Engine Running

ˇ Low engine speed.

ˇ Defective battery.

ˇ Defective indicator bulb.

Lights Do Not Work
