Storing Snowthrower Safely

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Engine exhaust fumes can cause sickness or death.

ˇ If it is necessary to run an engine in an enclosed area, use an exhaust pipe extension to remove the fumes. Always try to work in a well ventilated area.

ˇ DO NOT store snowblower with fuel in the tank inside a building where fumes may reach an open flame or spark.

ˇ Wipe up spilled fuel immediately.

ˇ Allow engine to cool before storing in any enclosure.

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Use John Deere Gasoline Storage Stabilizer (TY6295) or equivalent in the fuel tank. Follow directions on the can.

ˇ Stabilizer helps prevent varnish in carburetor and keeps jets from plugging. Either of these conditions could cause the engine to run lean and result in piston seizure and engine failure.

1. Remove the fuel tank cap.

2. Put John Deere Gasoline Storage Stabilizer or equivalent in the fuel tank. Follow directions on the can.

3. Run the engine 3-5 minutes with the auger ENGAGED. See Using the Auger Bail in Operating the Snowthrower section.

4. STOP the engine. Remove the key.

5. To help prevent cylinder corrosion, pull the recoil start handle until you feel resistance, then stop.

6. Clean the snowthrower. Wipe it dry.

7. Inspect the snowthrower for:

ˇ Loose parts: Tighten them.

ˇ Worn parts: Replace them.

ˇ The need for service: See the Service section.

8. Loosen the two handle knobs. Fold the handle down. You can hang the snowthrower on a wall hook.

9. Do not cover the snowthrower if the engine is warm.

When Storing WITHOUT STABILIZER:

ˇ Drain the fuel tank:

a. Turn the chute all the way to the left.

b. Tip the snowthrower forward and drain the fuel into a container as shown.

ˇ Return the snowthrower to the upright position.

ˇ Run the engine until it stops. Remove the key.

ˇ Repeat steps 5 through 9.

Removing the Snowthrower from Storage

1. Straighten the handle and tighten the knobs.

2. Fill the fuel tank with fresh fuel-oil mixture.

3. Lubricate the auger bail and idler arm.

4. Check and gap the spark plug.

5. Inspect the snowthrower:

ˇ Hardware must be tight.

ˇ Covers, guards, and shields must be in place.

ˇ Adjustments must be correct.
