Storing Safety

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Engine exhaust fumes can cause sickness or death.

ˇ If it is necessary to run an engine in an enclosed area, use an exhaust pipe extension to remove the fumes. Always try to work in a well ventilated area.

ˇ DO NOT store vehicle with fuel in the tank inside a building where fumes may reach an open flame or spark.

ˇ Allow engine to cool before storing in any enclosure.

ˇ Remove the battery and store it in a cool dry place where it will not freeze, and where children cannot reach it.

Preparing Engine For Storage

1. Put John Deere Gasoline Storage Stabilizer or an equivalent in the fuel tank. Follow the directions on the can.

2. Run engine for at least 10 minutes to make sure stabilizer gets into carburetor.

3. Change engine oil when engine is warm. (See Changing Engine Oil in the Service section.)

4. Remove spark plug. Put 30 mL (1 oz.) of clean engine oil in cylinder.

5. Install spark plug, but do not connect spark plug wire.

6. Crank the engine five or six times to distribute oil.

7. Clean the engine and engine compartment.

Storing Machine

1. Repair worn or damaged parts. Replace parts if necessary. Tighten loose hardware.

2. Wash the machine.

3. Paint scratched or chipped areas to prevent rust.

4. Lubricate pivot points.

5. Store the vehicle in a dry, protected place. If tiller is stored outside, put a waterproof cover over it.

Removing Machine From Storage

1. Fill fuel tank.

2. Check engine oil level.

3. Check spark plug gap:

ˇ 0.76 mm (0.030 in.)

4. . Install and tighten plug to 20 Nˇm (15 lb-ft).

5. Lubricate all pivot points.

6. Run the engine 5 minutes with no engine load.

7. Be sure all shields and guards are in place.
