Transmission Oil

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Do not mix transmission oils.

Use John Deere Low Viscosity HY-GARDŽ (J20D) transmission oil to reduce transmission noise and to increase response time for the hydraulics and power steering.

These machines are equipped with a internal wet disc brake transmission. Use only Low Viscosity HY-GARDŽ (J20D) transmission oil. Do not use type "F" automatic transmission fluid.

John Deere Low Viscosity HY-GARDŽ (J20D) transmission oil is specially formulated to provide maximum protection against mechanical wear, corrosion, and foaming. It may be used in all operating temperatures.

Checking Transmission Oil Level

1. Park machine safely on a level surface. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY section.)

2. Move hydraulic control lever back and forth a few times to relieve system pressure.

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Hot hydraulic oil will expand and show incorrect oil level. Check level in reservoir when engine is off and oil is cold.

3. Allow machine to cool.

MX8328

4. Locate transmission oil reservoir at rear of machine. Reservoir is marked FULL (A) and ADD (B).

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Contamination can damage the hydraulic system. Clean thoroughly around reservoir fill cap before opening.

MX8326

5. If oil level is low, slide operator's seat ahead and tip it forward to access reservoir (C). Clean area around reservoir cap.

6. Remove cap and filter (D).

7. Add John Deere Low Viscosity HY-GARDŽ (J20D) until oil level is at FULL mark on reservoir.

8. Install filter and cap.

9. Start engine.

10. Operate machine forward and in reverse several times.

11. Park machine safely on a level surface. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY section.)

12. Wait at least 3 minutes for hydraulic oil to cool.

13. Check oil level again. Add oil if necessary.

Changing Transmission Oil and Filters

1. Park machine safely on a level surface. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY section.)

2. Remove mower from machine.

NOTE: Transmission is divided into two internally connected cavities. Rear drain plug (A) will drain differential gear side and front plug (B) will drain hydrostatic side.

MX8329

3. Place drain pan under drain plugs (A) and (B). Remove plugs.

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Contamination can damage the hydraulic system. Clean thoroughly around fill caps before opening.

MX8361

4. Clean area around transmission fill cap (C) and cap on transmission oil reservoir (D).

5. Remove fill caps and reservoir filter to improve drainage. Allow to drain completely.

MX8340

6. Remove cap (E) from front side of transmission using a 3/8-inch ratchet.

MX8347

7. Remove and discard transmission filter (F).

8. Install new filter with spring (G) toward access cap. Install and tighten cap.

9. Install and tighten transmission drain plugs.

MX8340 MX8341

10. Replace hydraulic filter (H):

a. Note direction the filter is installed.

b. Loosen nut (I) to disconnect filter from hydraulic line.

c. Unscrew filter from other hydraulic line. Discard filter.

d. Install new filter and O-rings (J). Make sure filter is installed in same direction as old filter.

e. Tighten connections.

MX8361

11. Add approximately 2.4 L (2.5 qt) John Deere Low Viscosity HY-GARDŽ (J20D) to transmission fill opening (C) until oil level is at bottom of threads. Install and tighten fill cap.

12. Add approximately 2.4 L (2.5 qt) John Deere Low Viscosity HY-GARDŽ (J20D) to transmission reservoir (D) until oil level is at FULL mark. Install reservoir filter and cap.

13. Start engine.

14. Check for leaks around drain plugs and hydraulic filter.

15. Operate machine forward and in reverse several times.

16. Park machine safely on level surface. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY section.)

17. Wait at least 3 minutes for hydraulic oil to cool.

18. Check oil level in reservoir. Add oil to reservoir if necessary.
