Hydrostatic Drive Oil

E33786

Use oil viscosity based on the expected air temperature range during the period between oil changes.

John Deere HY-GARD® Transmission/Hydraulic Oil is recommended.

Other oils may be used if they are QUATROL® oils or if they meet John Deere Standard JDM J20C.

Extreme Pressure Grease

TS248

Use grease based on the expected air temperature range during the service interval.

John Deere Moly High Temperature EP Grease and John Deere High Temperature EP Grease are recommended.

Other greases that may be used are:

· SAE Multipurpose EP Grease with 3 to 5 percent molybdenum disulfide.

· SAE Multipurpose EP Grease.

· Greases meeting Military Specification MIL-G-10924C may be used as arctic grease.

Checking Hydraulic Oil Level

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Engine must NOT be running.

1. Park on level surface.

2. Lower cutting units to ground.

3. Stop engine.

4. Check oil level when oil is cold.

5. If oil level is low, add John Deere HY-GARD Transmission/Hydraulic Oil or an equivalent oil meeting John Deere J20C specifications.

E33723

6. Fill to 0-25 mm (0-1 in.) above bottom of filler neck screen (A).

Changing Hydraulic Oil

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Prevent dirt from getting in reservoir.

NOTE: Change oil at 1000 hours or yearly, whichever comes first.

M73951

1. Park on level surface.

2. Remove plug (A) and drain oil.

3. Install plug.

4. Fill reservoir with approximately 16.6 L (4.4 gal) of oil. Use John Deere HY-GARD oil or an equivalent oil meeting John Deere specifications.

5. Start engine. Cycle hydraulic control for 1 or 2 minutes.

6. Stop engine and check oil level. Level should be 0-25 mm (0-1 in.) above bottom screen.

Replacing Hydraulic Oil Filter

NOTE: Replace filter after first 50 hours of operation
and every 1000 hours or yearly.

M73964

1. Stop engine. Lock parking brake.

2. Raise seat.

3. Turn hydraulic oil filter (A) counterclockwise to remove. Use drain pan to catch dripping oil.

4. Put a film of clean oil on seal of new filter.

5. Turn filter until seal contacts mounting surface. Tighten
1/2-3/4 turn after gasket contact.

6. Start engine and check for leaks.

7. Stop engine and check oil level.

8. Lower seat.

Adjusting Transmission Neutral

The machine may creep forward or backward while in neutral with engine running.

After engine has started, release parking brake and with directional speed control pedals centered. The machine should not move.

If movement is evident, neutral return mechanism is adjusted incorrectly. Adjust until machine does not move when directional speed control pedals are in neutral position.

M73956

· Forward creep: adjust nuts (A) counterclockwise.

· Reverse creep: adjust nuts (A) clockwise.

Check operation of pedals before starting engine. Adjust if necessary.

NOTE: After adjusting Transmission Neutral, Safety Interlock may need adjustment. (See Adjusting Ignition Interlock Switches in this section).

Adjusting Mowing Speed

M73965

Adjusting screw (A) determines maximum mowing speed.

Mowing speed is 6.5 kph (4 mph). This speed can be determined by traveling 30.5 m (100 ft). This should take 17 seconds.

Adjusting Ignition Interlock Switches

E33716

1. Lift seat.

2. Move mow/transport lever to mow position.

M73965

3. Align switch (A) so that it is compressed against lever (B).

4. Put forward/reverse pedals in neutral position.

5. Align switch (C) so it is compressed against top of shift lever (D).

6. Release parking brake.

NOTE: Set screw (E), hub (F), and switch (G) are located under right side of platform.

E33718

7. Loosen set screw (E).

8. Align switch hub (F) so it compresses switch (G).

9. Tighten set screw.

10. Check adjustments by performing Tests in Operating The Machine section.
