c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Engine exhaust fumes can cause sickness or death. · If it is necessary to run an engine in an enclosed area, use an exhaust pipe extension to remove the fumes. Always try to work in a well ventilated area. · DO NOT store vehicle with fuel in the tank inside a building where fumes may reach an open flame or spark. · Allow engine to cool before storing in any enclosure. · Remove the battery and store it in a cool dry place where it will not freeze, and where children cannot reach it.

Storing The Mower

1. Put TY6295 John Deere Gasoline Storage Stabilizer or an equivalent in fuel tank. Follow directions on the can.

2. Run engine for at least 10 minutes to be sure stabilizer gets into the carburetor.

3. Change engine oil and filter when engine is warm. (See Changing Engine Oil in Service-Engine section.)

4. Repair worn or damaged parts. Install new parts if necessary.

5. Service air cleaner.

6. Lubricate all grease points.

7. Grease and adjust rear wheel bearings.

8. Grease pivot for rear wheel fork.

9. Wash mower.

NOTE: Start engine and run for a couple of minutes to remove water. Stop engine.

10. Clean engine and area around it. Remove oil, grease, and dirt.

11. Check engine compartment hoses.

12. Inspect engine combustion chamber.

13. Inspect engine valves and seats.

14. Replace spark plugs.

15. Flush cooling system and replace coolant.

16. Clean radiator fins.

17. Adjust parking brake.

18. Apply paint to areas that need it to prevent rust.

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Store battery where children cannot reach it.

19. Remove and clean battery. Check electrolyte level. Charge battery. Store battery in a cool, dry place to preserve battery life.

20. Store mower in a dry, protected place. If storing mower outside, put a waterproof cover over it.

21. Put blocks or stands under mower to take weight off tires. Let 1/3 of air out of tires.

22. Clean belts with a damp rag. Check belts for damage.

23. Check and adjust tension for axle and mower drive belts.

24. Check and adjust Greens And Turf Conditioner drive belt.

25. Inspect power brush drive belt.

26. Backlap cutting units.

27. Close fuel shut-off valve in front of seat.

28. Apply multipurpose lubricant on exposed cylinder rods.

29. Clean all cutting units to remove grass cutting and dirt.

30. Install new fuel filter element, hydraulic oil, and filter.

31. Clean hydraulic oil reservoir strainer.

32. Apply a coating of oil to cutting reel and bottom blade. Spray John Deere Multipurpose spray lubricant on rollers. Do not wipe off. This will work as a good rust preventative.

Removing Mower From Storage

1. Check tire pressure.

2. Wipe grease off reels.

3. Check battery electrolyte level. Charge battery (11.6 volts) if necessary. Install battery.

4. Check engine oil level.

5. Remove and clean spark plugs.

6. Check hydraulic oil level in reservoir.

7. Lubricate all grease points.

8. Install cutting units if removed.

9. Check hoses (air intake, fuel, hydraulic, cooling system), clamps, and connections.

10. Be sure shields and guards are in place.

11. Open fuel shut-off valve.

12. Fill fuel tank with fresh clean fuel.

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Start engine ONLY in a well-ventilated place.

13. Run engine 5 minutes before putting engine under load.
