Engine Warranty Maintenance Statement

Maintenance, repair, or replacement of the emission control devices and systems on this engine, which are being done at the customers expense, may be performed by any nonroad engine repair establishment or individual. Warranty repairs must be performed by an authorized John Deere dealer.

Adjusting Carburetor

NOTE: The carburetor is calibrated by the engine manufacturer and should not require any adjustments.

If engine is operated at altitudes above 1829 m (6,000 ft.), some carburetors may require a special high altitude main jet. See your John Deere dealer.

Possible engine surging will occur at high rpm when the transmission is in neutral ("N") and the PTO switch is in the OFF position. This is a normal condition due to the emission control system.

If engine is hard to start or runs rough, check the TROUBLESHOOTING section of this manual.

After performing the checks in the troubleshooting section and your engine is still not performing correctly, contact your John Deere dealer.

Avoid Fumes

MIF

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Engine exhaust fumes can cause sickness or death:

- If it is necessary to run an engine in an enclosed area, use an exhaust pipe extension to remove the fumes.

- Always try to work in a well ventilated area.

Engine Oil

Use oil viscosity based on the expected air temperature range during the period between oil changes.

The following John Deere oils are preferred:

MIF

· PLUS-4® (SAE 10W-40)

· TORQ-GARD SUPREME® (SAE 5W-30)

The following John Deere oils are also recommended, based on their specified temperature range:

· TURF-GARD® (SAE 10W-30)

· PLUS-4® (SAE 10W-30)

· TORQ-GARD SUPREME® (SAE 30)

Other oils may be used if above John Deere oils are not available, provided they meet one of the following specifications:

· SAE 10W-40-API Service Classification SG or higher

· SAE 5W-30-API Service Classification SG or higher

· SAE 10W-30-API Service Classification SG or higher

· SAE 30-API Service Classification SC or higher

Check Engine Oil Level

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Do not check or add oil while engine is running.

1. Park mower on a level surface. Stop engine. Allow engine to cool.

2. Lift and secure cowling in the open position.

3. Clean area around dipstick prior to removing it.

4. Remove dipstick (A). Wipe it clean.

M93944

5. Install dipstick in tube.

6. Remove dipstick. Check oil level on dipstick; oil level should be between ADD and FULL (B).

· If oil is low, add oil to bring oil level no higher than the FULL mark on dipstick. (See Engine Oil in this section for correct oil.)

· If oil level is above the FULL mark, drain to proper level.

MIF

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! To prevent extensive engine wear or damage, always maintain the proper engine oil level. Never operate the engine with the oil level below the add mark or over the full mark.

7. Install dipstick. Lower the cowling.

Changing Engine Oil and Filter

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Help prevent serious personal injury. Cowling support release must be secured in channel notch before service functions within engine area are attempted. See Raising and Lowering Cowling in the Operating Machine section.

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Check the Service Interval Chart section for scheduled engine oil and filter change information.

Severe or unusual conditions may require a more frequent service interval. (See the Service Interval Chart section for reference.)

1. Run engine to warm oil.

2. Park front mower on a hard, level surface.

3. Engage the park brake. Stop the engine.

4. Lift and secure cowling in the open position.

5. Drain oil:

· Put container under drain tube.

· Loosen and remove drain plug (A).

M93113

· Allow oil to drain into an oil drain pan.

· After oil drains, install and tighten drain plug.

6. Remove oil filter (B). Turn filter left to remove.

7. Apply a film of clean engine oil on gasket of new filter.

8. Install filter. Turn filter right until gasket makes contact with mounting surface. Tighten 1/2 to 3/4 turn after gasket contact.

9. Clean area around the oil fill cap (C) and oil dipstick (D).

M93944

10. Unscrew and remove the oil fill cap. Add approximately 2.2 L (2.3 qt.) of oil. Add approximately 0.24 L (1/2 pt) of oil for the filter capacity. (See Engine Oil in this section for correct oil application.)

11. Install and tighten oil fill cap.

12. Start engine and run at slow throttle for approximately two minutes. Check for leaks around filter and drain plug.

13. Stop engine.

14. Check oil level:

· Remove and wipe oil dipstick clean with a rag.

· Install dipstick.

· Remove dipstick. Oil level should be between ADD and FULL (E).

MIF

15. Install dipstick.

16. Lower cowling.

Checking Spark Plugs

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Before you remove the spark plug, STOP the engine and let it cool.

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! DO NOT clean spark plug with abrasives.

1. Stop engine and engage park brake.

2. Lift and secure cowling in the open position.

3. Clean area around both spark plugs.

4. Disconnect the spark plug wire (A) from each plug.

M93147

5. Remove and inspect spark plugs:

· Clean each plug and check for damage, replace if necessary.

· If plugs are in good condition, check gap.

6. Check and adjust spark plug gap (B) to 0.76 mm (0.030 in.).

M85200

7. Install spark plugs and tighten to 24.4-29.8 N·m (18-22 ft.-lb.).

8. Install both spark plug wires.

9. Lower cowling.

Cleaning Engine Oil Cooling Fins

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Help prevent injury from foreign particles when using compressed air for cleaning purposes, Clear area of bystanders, and wear personal eye protection to guard against flying debris.

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! To ensure proper cooling, keep the engine oil cooling fins and other external surfaces of the engine clean at all times. Operating the engine with obstructed cooling fins could cause engine damage due to overheating.

1. Stop engine and engage park brake.

2. Lift and secure cowling in the open position.

3. Clean engine oil cooling fins (A) with a rag, brush, or compressed air.

M97472, M97474

4. Lower cowling.

Cleaning Engine Cooling Fins

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Help prevent injury from foreign particles when using compressed air for cleaning purposes, Clear area of bystanders, and wear personal eye protection to guard against flying debris.

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! To ensure proper cooling, keep the engine cooling fins and surrounding area clean at all times. Operating the engine with obstructed cooling fins could cause engine damage due to overheating.

1. Stop engine and engage park brake.

2. Lift and secure cowling in the open position.

3. Remove cap screws (A) and front clean out plates (B) from each side of engine.

M94001
