c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Engine exhaust fumes can cause sickness or death.

· If it is necessary to run an engine in an enclosed area, use an exhaust pipe extension to remove the fumes. Always try to work in a well ventilated area.

· Do not store vehicle with fuel in the tank inside a building where fumes may reach an open flame or spark.

· Allow engine to cool before storing in any enclosure.

· Remove the battery and store it in a cool dry place where it will not freeze, and where children cannot reach it.

Preparing Machine for Storage

1. Repair any worn or damaged parts. Replace parts if necessary. Tighten loose hardware.

2. Repair scratched or chipped metal surfaces to prevent rust.

3. Clean under the deck and remove grass and debris from inside chute and bagger.

4. Wash the machine and apply wax to metal and plastic surfaces.

5. Run machine for five minutes to dry belts and pulleys.

6. Apply light coat of engine oil to pivot and wear points to prevent rust.

7. Lubricate grease points.

8. Check tire pressure.

Storing the Vehicle

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Stale fuel can produce varnish and plug carburetor components and affect engine performance.

· Add fuel conditioner or stabilizer to fresh fuel before filling tank.

1. Put appropriate John Deere Fuel Conditioner and Stabilizer or an equivalent in fuel tank. Follow directions on the product label.

2. Run engine for at least 10 minutes to be sure stabilizer gets into the fuel system.

3. Change engine oil and filter when engine is warm.

4. Gas Models Only:

· Remove spark plugs.

· Put 30 ml (1 oz.) of clean engine oil into each cylinder.

· Install spark plugs. Do not install wires.

13. Clean radiator cooling fins.

14. Clean oil cooler coils-auxiliary oil reservoir tank.

15. Apply paint to areas that need it to prevent rust.

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Battery contains acid that is poisonous and corrosive. Store battery in an area out of the reach of children.

16. Remove and clean battery. Check electrolyte level. Charge battery. Store battery in a cool, dry place to preserve battery life.

17. Store vehicle in a dry, protected place. If storing vehicle outside, put a waterproof cover over it.

18. Put blocks or stands under vehicle to take weight off tires. Let 1/3 of air out of tires.

19. Clean alternator belt with a damp rag. Check belt for damage.

20. Check and adjust alternator belt tension.

21. Diesel Model: Close fuel sediment bowl shut-off valve.

22. Apply multipurpose lubricant on exposed cylinder rods.

· Correct tire pressure is between 69-83 kPa (10-12 psi).

2. Check and tighten wheel hardware.

· Tighten wheel hardware alternately to 115 N·m (85 lb-ft.).

3. Check battery electrolyte level. Charge battery if necessary. Install battery.

4. Connect spark plug wires.
