Service LubricationGreaseThe following greases are preferred: High Speed ApplicationsUse John Deere Multi-Purpose SD Polyurea Grease or John Deere Multi-Purpose HD Lithium Complex Grease for the following high speed applications: ˇ Mower Spindles (7 places) (1600). ˇ Rear Axle Bearings (1 place). ˇ Mechanical Four Wheel Drive Shaft Universal Joints (2 places). Other ApplicationsUse John Deere Multi-Purpose HD Lithium Complex Grease or John Deere Moly High Temperature EP Grease for all other applications: ˇ Caster Wheels (10 places) (1600). ˇ Caster Arm Bushings (10 places) (1600). ˇ Mower Deck Lift Arms (4 places). ˇ Side Mower Deck Lift Cylinders (4 places). ˇ Hydraulic Steering Cylinder (2 places). ˇ Hydrostatic Creep Adjustment Eccentric (1 place). If not using any of the preferred greases, be sure to use a general purpose grease with a NLGI grade No. 2 rating. Avoid use of John Deere Moly High Temperature EP Grease on high speed applications such as mower spindles and the rear axle. Operating in extremely wet conditions may require use of special purpose greases. See your John Deere dealer. Wipe off all grease fittings before and after lubrication to prevent contamination. Lubricate Mower Spindles, Caster Wheels, and Caster Wheel Yokes - 16001. Lower mower decks completely. 2. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the Safety Section.) Lubricate mower deck grease fittings: ˇ Mower blade spindles (A) with John Deere Multi-Purpose SD Polyurea grease or John Deere Multi-Purpose HD Lithium Complex Grease. ˇ Caster wheels (B) and caster arm bushings (C) with John Deere Multi-Purpose HD Lithium Complex Grease or John Deere Moly High Temperature EP Grease. Lubricate Mower Lift Arms, Rockshaft, and Lift Cylinders1. Lower mower decks completely. 2. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the Safety Section.) 3. Lubricate front mower deck lift arm pivot joint (A) and rockshaft pivot joint (B) at both sides of machine with John Deere Multi-Purpose HD Lithium Complex Grease or John Deere Moly High Temperature EP Grease. 4. Lubricate the side deck lift arm pivot joint (C) and lift cylinder pivot joint (D) at both sides of machine with John Deere Multi-Purpose HD Lithium Complex Grease or John Deere Moly High Temperature EP Grease. 5. Start machine. Raise side decks completely. 6. Engage both side deck transport locks. 7. Stop engine and remove the key. 8. Lubricate grease fitting (E) at the base end of side deck lift cylinder (F) at both sides of machine with John Deere Multi-Purpose HD Lithium Complex Grease or John Deere Moly High Temperature EP Grease. Lubricate Rear Axle Pivot Pin1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the Safety Section.) 2. Lubricate grease fitting (A) at left side of rear axle with John Deere Multi-Purpose SD Polyurea Grease or John Deere Multi-Purpose HD Lithium Complex Grease. Lubricate Rear Tie Rod1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the Safety Section.) 2. Lubricate rear tie rod ends (A) with John Deere Multi-Purpose HD Lithium Complex Grease or John Deere Moly High Temperature EP Grease. Lubricate Hydraulic Steering Cylinder1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the Safety Section.) 2. Lubricate hydraulic steering cylinder ends (A) at rear of machine with John Deere Multi-Purpose HD Lithium Complex Grease or John Deere Moly High Temperature EP Grease. Lubricate Hydrostatic Control Arm1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the Safety Section.) 2. Lubricate hydrostatic creep adjustment eccentric (A) with John Deere Multi-Purpose HD Lithium Complex Grease or John Deere Moly High Temperature EP Grease. Lubricate Drive Shaft1. Raise side mower decks completely (1600 only). 2. Engage both side deck transport locks. 3. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the Safety Section.) 4. Loosen hose clamp (A) on drive shaft cover. 5. Slide rear drive shaft cover (B) toward front of machine to access rear universal joint. 6. Lubricate rear universal joint (C) with John Deere Multi-Purpose SD Polyurea Grease or John Deere Multi-Purpose HD Lithium Complex Grease. 7. Return rear drive shaft cover (B) to its original position over rear universal joint. 8. Slide hose clamp (A) and front drive shaft cover (D) toward rear of machine to access the front universal joint. 9. Lubricate front universal joint (E) with John Deere Multi-Purpose SD Polyurea Grease or John Deere Multi-Purpose HD Lithium Complex Grease. 10. Return front drive shaft cover (D) over front universal joint. Ensure rear drive shaft cover is also in place. 11. Slide the clamp behind the front drive shaft cover and tighten. |
