Service Steering & Brakes


Grease

Use grease based on the expected air temperature range during the service interval.

The following greases are preferred:

ˇ John Deere Moly High Temperature EP Grease.

ˇ John Deere High Temperature EP Grease.

ˇ John Deere GREASE-GARD.

Other greases may be used are:

ˇ SAE Multipurpose EP Grease with 3 to 5 percent molybdenum disulfide.

ˇ SAE Multipurpose EP Grease.

ˇ Greases meeting Military Specification MIL-G-10924C may be used as arctic grease.

Adjusting Brakes

1. Park Front Mower safely.

2. Disconnect battery ground cable.

NOTE: Wheel and brake drum are removed for clarity.

3. Raise and support Front Mower with jackstands.

4. Reach through slot (A) in back plate with screwdriver for access to star adjuster (B).

5. Turn star adjuster with screwdriver until brake shoes begin to drag on drum as wheel is turned.

6. Push brake pedals down firmly to seat brake shoes and check adjustment.

7. Adjust brakes so brake shoes just clear drums and do not drag when pedals are released.

8. Repeat adjustment procedure on opposite wheel.

9. Remove stands and lower machine.

Adjust Brake Pedal Free Play

1. ENGAGE park brake.

2. Measure length of spring on left and right brake rods. Springs should be approximately 1.75 in. (45 mm).

3. Turn nut to adjust spring length, if necessary.

Lubricating Rear Wheel Spindles And Steering Cylinder Rod End

Lubricate two rear axle spindles (A) (one on each side) and steering cylinder rod end (B) with one or two shots of John Deere multipurpose grease or equivalent.
