c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Engine exhaust fumes can cause sickness or death. · If it is necessary to run an engine in an enclosed area, use an exhaust pipe extension to remove the fumes. · Always try to work in a well ventilated area. · Do not store machine with fuel in tank in a building where fumes may reach an open flame or spark. · Allow engine to cool before storing in any enclosure. · Remove the battery and store it in a cool dry place where it will not freeze, and where children cannot reach it.

Preparing Engine for Storage

1. Put John Deere Gasoline Storage Stabilizer or an equivalent in the fuel tank. Follow the directions on the can.

2. Run engine for at least 10 minutes to make sure stabilizer gets into carburetor.

3. Change engine oil when engine is warm. (See Changing Engine Oil and Filter in the Service - Engine section.)

4. Remove spark plugs. Put 30 mL (1 oz.) of clean engine oil into each cylinder.

5. Install spark plugs, but do not connect spark plug wires.

6. Crank the engine five or six times to distribute oil.

7. Turn fuel selector valve to the "OFF" (CLOSED) position (A). (See Using Fuel Shut-Off Valve in the Operating section.)

8. Clean the engine and engine area.

Storing Machine

1. Remove the battery (if equipped):

· Clean it. Check the electrolyte level. (See Checking Battery Electrolyte Level in the Service - Electrical section.)

· Charge the battery. (See Charging The Battery in the Service - Electrical section.)

· Store the battery in a cool, dry place where it will not freeze.

2. Repair worn or damaged parts. Replace parts if necessary. Tighten loose hardware.

3. Wash the machine.

4. Paint scratched or chipped areas to prevent rust.

5. Lubricate grease points.

6. Store the vehicle in a dry, protected place. If unit is stored outside, put a waterproof cover over it.

Removing Machine From Storage

1. Check machine tire pressure.

2. Fill fuel tank. Open fuel shut-off valve.

· Turn fuel supply lever to the "RH TANK" (OPEN) position (A) or the "LH TANK" (OPEN) position (B).

3. Check engine oil level.

4. Check battery electrolyte level. Charge battery if necessary. Install battery.

5. Check spark plug gap. Install and tighten spark plugs.

6. Lubricate all grease points.

7. Check transmission oil level.

8. Run the engine five minutes with no engine load.

9. Be sure all shields and guards are in place.
