Service TransmissionAnti-Chatter Transmission OilNOTE: NOTE: Machine is filled with John Deere 85W140 API GL-5 Gear Oil transmission oil at the factory. DO NOT mix oils. These machines are equipped with a gear transmission. To avoid chatter, use only 85W140 API GL-5 Gear Oil transmission oil. John Deere 85W140 API GL-5 Gear Oil transmission oil is specially formulated to minimize clutch chatter, and to provide maximum protection against mechanical wear, and corrosion. Checking Belt ConditionCheck belt wear and condition. · Measure belt width. Belt must not be less than 27 mm (1-1/16 inch). Check drive belt condition. Belt must not be glazed or cracked. NOTE: If replacement is necessary see your John Deere Dealer, or the Technical Manual for this machine. Checking Drive Clutch Shoes1. Check clutch shoes for wear. 2. Replace shoes when worn to 1-2 mm (.040 to .080 in.) from ramp surface (A). NOTE: If replacement is necessary see your John Deere Dealer, or the Technical Manual for this machine. Checking Transaxle Oil1. Park machine on level surface. 2. Check oil level when engine is cold. 4. Clean the area around the check plug (A). 6. Oil should drip slightly from the plug hole (B). 7. If oil level is low, remove filler cap (C). Add 85W140 GL-5 Gear Oil or equivalent oil until you can see oil drip slightly from plug hole. 8. Install and tighten check plug (A). Changing Transaxle Oil1. Park machine on level surface. 3. After all oil is drained, install and tighten plug. 5. Clean the area around transaxle check plug. 6. Remove plug and filler cap (C).
7. Add approximately 2.3 L (2.5 qt) 9. Oil should drip slightly from plug hole (D). Lubricating Rear AxleLubricate fittings (A) with one or two shots of John Deere Multipurpose grease or an equivalent.
