Storing Safety

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Engine exhaust fumes can cause sickness or death.

ˇ If it is necessary to run an engine in an enclosed area, use an exhaust pipe extension to remove the fumes. Always try to work in a well ventilated area.

ˇ DO NOT store vehicle with fuel in the tank inside a building where fumes may reach an open flame or spark.

ˇ Allow engine to cool before storing in any enclosure.

ˇ Remove the battery and store it in a cool dry place where it will not freeze, and where children cannot reach it.

Preparing Engine For Storage

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Use a gasoline storage stabilizer before you store the vehicle to prevent engine damage.

1. Put John Deere Gasoline Storage Stabilizer or an equivalent in fuel tank. Follow directions on can.

2. Run engine for at least 10 minutes to make sure stabilizer gets into carburetor.

3. Change engine oil when engine is warm. (See Changing Engine Oil and Filter in the Service - Engine section.)

4. Remove spark plugs. Put 30 mL (1 oz.) of clear oil in cylinders.

5. Install spark plugs, but do not connect spark plug wires.

6. Crank the engine five or six times to distribute oil.

7. Clean the engine and engine compartment.

8. Paint scratched or chipped parts of engine to prevent rust.

Storing Vehicle

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! To avoid injury, store battery where children cannot reach it.

1. Storing battery:

ˇ Remove the battery.

ˇ Clean it.

ˇ Check the electrolyte level.

ˇ Charge the battery.

ˇ Store battery in a cool, dry place where it will not freeze.

ˇ Repair worn or damaged parts. Replace parts if necessary. Tighten loose hardware.

ˇ Service the air cleaner.

ˇ Wash the vehicle.

Storing Cutting Units

1. Backlap cutting units.

2. Clean all cutting units to remove grass cutting and dirt.

3. Apply a coating of oil to cutting reel and bottom blade. Spray John Deere Multipurpose spray lubricant on rollers. Do not wipe off. This will work as a good rust preventative.

Removing Vehicle From Storage

1. Check tire pressure.

2. Fill fuel tank. Check engine oil level.

3. Check battery electrolyte level. Charge battery if necessary. Install battery.

4. Check spark plug gap. Install and tighten plugs to 20 Nˇm (15 lb-ft).

5. Lubricate all grease points.

6. Check transmission oil level.

7. Check hoses and clamps (air intake, fuel, hydraulic, cooling system).

8. Be sure all guards and shields are in place.

9. Open fuel shut-off valve.

10. Run the engine 5 minutes with no engine load.

Removing Cutting Units From Storage

1. Wipe grease off reels.

2. Install cutting units if removed.
