Service EngineAvoid Fumes
Engine OilUse oil viscosity based on the expected air temperature range during the period between oil changes. The following oil is preferred: The following oils are also recommended: · John Deere TORQ-GARD SUPREME® Other oils may be used if they meet one of the following: · API Service Classification CE · API Service Classification CD If John Deere PLUS-50 engine oil and a John Deere oil filter are used, the oil and filter service interval may be extended by 50 hours. If diesel fuel exceeding 0.5% sulfur content is used, reduce the service interval for engine oil and filter by 50%. Oils meeting Military Specification MIL-L-46167B may be used as arctic oils. Raising Hood1. Stop engine. Lock parking brake. Checking Engine Oil Level
3. Check oil a few minutes after engine has been shut off. 4. Remove dipstick (A). Wipe with a clean rag. Install dipstick. 6. Oil must be between ADD and FULL marks. 7. If oil level is low, remove oil filler cap. Add oil to bring oil level no higher than FULL mark on dipstick. See Engine Oil in this section. Changing Engine Oil And Filter2. Run engine a few minutes to warm oil. 4. Remove drain plug (A) on bottom of engine block. 5. While oil is draining, change engine oil filter. 7. Turn filter (B) counterclockwise to remove. 8. Apply a film of clean oil to new filter gasket. 9. Install filter. Turn filter until gasket contacts mounting surface. Turn filter by hand 1/2 turn more. 10. Install and tighten drain plug. 11. Remove filler cap. Add 5.8 L (6 qt) of oil. See Engine Oil in this section. 12. Install cap. Run engine. Check for leaks around filter and drain plug. Stop engine. Check oil level. Service Cooling System SafelyEngine CoolantUse ethylene glycol base coolant. These coolants usually have labels stating "For Automobile and Light Duty Service." These products are also often labeled for use in aluminum engines. Check container label before using.
Mix approximately 50 percent antifreeze with 50 percent distilled or deionized water. This mixture will provide freeze protection to -34 degree F (-37 degrees C). Certain geographical areas may require lower temperature protection. See the label on your antifreeze container or consult your John Deere dealer to obtain the latest information and recommendations. The recommended antifreeze provides: · Corrosion-resistant environment within the cooling system. · Compatibility with cooling system hose and seal material. · Protection during cold and hot weather operations. Checking Coolant Level1. Check coolant when engine is cool. 3. Coolant should be 13 to 25 mm (1/2 to 1 in.) below bottom of filler neck. 4. If coolant is low, add ethylene glycol (without stop-leak) antifreeze and water in amounts shown on antifreeze container. 6. Fill coolant expansion tank to half full. Emptying Dust Valve2. Squeeze valve (A) to empty dust. Cleaning RadiatorNOTE: Hood removed for illustration. 2. Lower oil coolers and bracket away from radiator.
3. Clean radiator fins using compressed air or a clean brush.
5. Raise oil coolers and bracket Cleaning Under Hood And Fuel Tank
Draining Cooling System1. Stop engine and lock parking brake. 2. Raise hood. Let engine cool. 4. Open radiator drain cock (B). Drain coolant into a pan. 5. Remove block drain plug (C). Drain coolant from engine block. 6. After all coolant is drained, tighten radiator drain cock and block drain plug. 7. Remove coolant tank cap on front of radiator support. 8. Remove tank and empty coolant. 9. Install tank on radiator support. Flushing Cooling System
1. Fill cooling system with clean water and cooling system cleaner. Follow directions on can. 2. Fill coolant tank half full. 3. Install and tighten radiator cap and coolant tank cap. 4. Start and run engine until operating temperature is reached. 5. Open both drains. Drain the cooling system immediately before rust and dirt settle. Filling Cooling System
1. Fill cooling system. For cold weather, use a solution of only ethylene glycol antifreeze (without a stop-leak additive) and clean, soft water. A chart on the antifreeze container tells how much antifreeze to use for the freeze protection needed in your area. 3. Run engine until operating temperature is reached. 4. Stop engine. After engine cools, check coolant level and add if necessary. 5. Check condition of coolant system hoses. Install new hoses periodically. Tighten hose clamps regularly. Cleaning Oil CoolersNOTE: Hood removed for illustration. Clean oil cooler fins (A) using compressed air or a brush. Do not bend fins. Replacing Air Cleaner Primary Element3. Remove wing nut and element. 4. Install new element, wing nut, and cover. Replacing Air Cleaner Secondary Element2. Remove primary element. See Replacing Air Cleaner Primary Element in this section. 3. Remove wing nut and element. 4. Clean the inside of the air cleaner housing and cover.
5. Install new element and wing
6. Install primary element and Draining Water From Fuel Filter/Water Separator3. Fasten plastic tube (A) to drain tube on bottom of filter/separator. Put tube in container. 7. Drain about one-half cup of fuel, drain fuel until fuel looks pure, or drain fuel until water-in fuel light goes out. 8. Tighten drain plug (B) and air vent plug (C). Replacing Fuel Filter/Water SeparatorNOTE: :Install new fuel filter after 200-Hours of operation or yearly, whichever comes first. Replace filter when there is little fuel in tank. 2. Raise hood. See Raising Hood in this section. 3. Turn air vent plug (A) counterclockwise to open vent. 4. Fasten drain hose (C) to drain tube. 5. Turn drain plug (B) counterclockwise. Drain all fuel from water separator into a container. 6. Release clamps to remove separator. 7. Install new separator. Fasten using clamps. Bleeding Fuel System1. Fasten clear drain hose to vent pipe (A). 2. Loosen air vent plug on top of fuel filter/water separator. 3. Turn key to ON. Let fuel pump fill filter/separator. Close air vent when fuel flows out of vent. 5. Tighten screw when fuel begins to flow from around bleed screw. Injection Pump And NozzlesChanging the injection pump in any way not approved by the manufacturer will end the warranty. See your copy of the John Deere warranty on this machine. Do not service an injection pump that is not operating correctly. See your John Deere distributor. If injection nozzles are not working correctly or are dirty, the engine will not run normally. See your John Deere distributor. Replacing Thermostat1. Stop engine and lock parking brake. Raise hood. Let engine cool. 3. Open radiator drain, see Draining, Flushing, and Filling Cooling System in this section. Drain coolant into a container. 4. Remove two cap screws (A) from thermostat housing. 5. Remove thermostat and gasket. 6. Install new thermostat and gasket. Wax bulb on thermostat should be turned toward the engine. Gasket mounting surface must be clean. 7. Install and tighten cap screws. 9. Fill radiator with coolant. Install and tighten radiator cap. Tightening Air Intake Hose ClampsTightening Cooling System Hose ClampsTighten radiator hose clamps (A). Tightening Fuel Hose ClampsChecking and Adjusting Belt TensionCheck alternator belt after first 10 hours of operation and every 50 hours thereafter. 1. Push on belt halfway between pulleys. 2. Belt should deflect 13 mm (1/2 in.) with 95 N (20 lb) force. 3. Loosen cap screw and apply pressure to front alternator frame only. |
