c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Engine exhaust fumes can cause sickness or death.

ˇ If it is necessary to run an engine in an enclosed area, use an exhaust pipe extension to remove the fumes. Always try to work in a well ventilated area.

ˇ DO NOT store vehicle with fuel in the tank inside a building where fumes may reach an open flame or spark.

ˇ Allow engine to cool before storing in any enclosure.

ˇ Remove the battery and store it in a cool dry place where it will not freeze, and where children cannot reach it.

Storing the Greensmower

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Gas Units: Gasoline storage stabilizer should always be used when storing the mower to prevent carburetor varnishing and partial plugging of carburetor jets. Either of these conditions can cause the engine to run lean and result in piston seizure and engine failure.

1. Gas Model: Put John Deere Gasoline Storage Stabilizer or an equivalent in fuel tank. Follow directions on the can.
2. Gas Model: Run engine for at least 10 minutes to be sure stabilizer gets into the carburetor.

3. Change engine oil and filter when engine is warm. (See Changing Engine Oil and Filter in the Service-Engine section.)

4. Repair worn or damaged parts. Install new parts if necessary.

5. Service air cleaner.

6. Wash mower.

7. Lubricate all grease points-wipe off excess grease.

NOTE: Start engine and run for a couple of minutes to remove water. Stop engine.

8. Clean engine and area around it. Remove oil, grease, and dirt.

9. Check engine compartment hoses.

10. Inspect engine combustion chamber.

11. Inspect engine valves and seats.

12. Gas Model: Inspect spark plugs.

13. Check engine coolant level and freeze point.

14. Clean rear grill screen.

15. Clean oil cooler coils and radiator cooling fins.

16. Adjust parking brake.

17. Apply paint to areas that need it to prevent rust.

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Battery contains acid that is poisonous and corrosive. Store battery in an area out of the reach of children.

18. Remove and clean battery. Check electrolyte level. Charge battery. Store battery in a cool, dry place to preserve battery life.

19. Store mower in a dry, protected place. If storing mower outside, put a waterproof cover over it.

20. Put blocks or stands under mower to take weight off tires. Let 1/3 of air out of tires.

21. Clean belts with a damp rag. Check belts for damage.

22. Gas Model: Check and adjust fan belt tension.
23. Diesel Model: Check and adjust alternator belt tension.

24. Backlap cutting units.

25. Diesel Model: Close fuel sediment bowl shut-off valve.

26. Apply multipurpose lubricant on exposed cylinder rods.

27. Clean all cutting units to remove grass cuttings and dirt.

28. Gas Model: Replace fuel filter.

29. Apply a coating of oil to cutting reel and bottom blade. Spray John Deere Multipurpose spray lubricant on rollers. Do not wipe off. This will work as a good rust preventative.

Removing Greensmower From Storage

1. Check tire pressure.

ˇ Correct tire pressure is between 69-83 kPa
(10-12 psi).

2. Check and tighten wheel hardware.

ˇ Tighten wheel hardware alternately to 81-95 Nˇm (60-70 lb-ft.).

3. Wipe grease off cutting units.

4. Check battery electrolyte level. Charge battery if necessary. Install battery.

5. Check engine oil level.

6. Check hydraulic oil level in reservoir.

7. Lubricate all grease points.

8. Install cutting units if removed.

9. Check hoses (air intake, fuel, hydraulic, cooling system), clamps, and connections.

10. Be sure shields and guards are in place.

11. Diesel Model: Open fuel sediment bowl shut-off valve.

12. Fill fuel tank with fresh clean fuel.

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Start engine ONLY in a well-ventilated place.

13. Run engine five minutes at slow-medium idle before putting engine under load.
