Using Troubleshooting Chart

If you are experiencing a problem that is not listed in this chart, see your John Deere dealer for service.

When you have checked all the possible causes listed and you are still experiencing the problem, see your John Deere dealer.

Engine

IF

CHECK

Engine will not start or is hard to start.

Turn key switch to OFF position, then back to START.

Push the brake pedal DOWN and LOCK the park brake.

Push the PTO switch DOWN to the OFF position.

Open the fuel shutoff valve.

Push throttle to full forward position.

Check the fuel tank (gauge) for fuel.

Let the travel pedals return to NEUTRAL.

Fill the fuel tank. Check for fuel at injector pump.

Water in fuel or incorrect fuel. Drain and refill the tank.

Drain and fill engine with correct oil.

Battery discharged, or dirty battery terminals.

Engine runs rough.

Clean the air intake screens.

Replace the air cleaner element(s).

Replace the fuel filter.

Drain and fill the tank with correct fuel.

Drain the fuel system. Flush out dirt. Add fresh fuel.

Check the electrical connections.

Fuel injectors clogged.

Engine lacks power.

Reduce the load.

Replace the air cleaner element(s).

Replace the fuel filter.

Drain and fill the tank with correct fuel.

Clean the air intake screens.

Engine oil light comes on.

Add oil.

Change the oil filter.

Drain and fill the engine with correct oil.

Engine overheats.

Check the coolant level.

Clean the air intake screen and radiator screen.

Check oil level.

Operate Front Mower with engine at FAST idle position while mowing.

Replace the air cleaner element(s).

Replace thermostat.

Engine will not slow idle.

Throttle cable needs adjustment. See technical manual or your John Deere dealer.

Air cleaners clogged.

Fuel injectors clogged.


Front Mower

IF

CHECK

Vibrates when PTO is turned ON.

Check the PTO drive belt for damage.

Vibrates all the time.

Check transaxle drive belt for damage.

Creeps when park brake is OFF.

Adjust transmission neutral.

Front mower will not move with the engine running.

Unlock the park brake.

Check the transmission oil level.

Run the engine several minutes to warm it during cold weather.


Electrical System

IF

CHECK

Starter does not work or will not crank engine.

Push the brake pedal down or lock the park brake.

Push the PTO switch knob down.

Clean the battery terminals and cable ends.

Check for a blown fuse.

Check the electrical connections.

Check the fusible links.

One circuit does not work.

Check for a blown fuse.

Only starting system works.

Check the fusible links.

PTO automatically disengages. (S.N. 011682- ).

Operating engine in an overheated condition. Clean radiator.

Battery is discharging (yellow light is on).

Replace the battery if a cell is dead.

Run the engine faster. Operate the mower at FAST idle.

Check the electrical connections.

Check the alternator.

Check the electrolyte level.


Mower Deck

IF

CHECK

Discharge chute plugging

Grass is too wet. Wait for the grass to dry.

Raise the cutting height and cut the grass twice.

Mow at FAST idle.

Slow down.

Patches of grass uncut

Slow down.

Mow at FAST idle.

Remove the belt shields. Clean the sheaves and belt.

Sharpen the mower blades.

PTO clutch slipping. Check blade stop times

Belt slipping. Blade won't turn or turns slow.

Remove the belt shields. Clean the sheaves and belt.

PTO clutch slipping. Check blade stop time.

Replace the belt if it is badly worn.

Mower vibrates too much

Remove the belt shields. Clean the sheaves and belt. Check sheaves for damage. Replace belt if damaged.

Remove and balance the blades.

Cut is uneven

Check the mower level.

Slow down.

Sharpen the blades.

Check the tire pressure.

Mower slows down the engine

Mow at FAST throttle position.

Slow down.

Remove debris wrapped around spindles.

Sharpen the mower blades.

Blades scalping grass

Raise the cutting height

Slow down before a turn.

Change the mowing pattern to avoid ridges.

Check the tire pressure.

Check for a bent blade.

Adjust the gauge wheel.
